Greetings! Yesterday we observed a somber day as fellow Americans - a day to remember and to celebrate the lives of brave men and women of the United States armed forces who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Originally enacted as a way to pay homage to the thousands of lost soldiers during the Civil War, the holiday was later expanded to include all soldiers who died in action.
The ultimate sacrifice is an inherent risk of the job, for sure, but for many men and women, returning to a life of normalcy and prosperity is even more daunting. We know many people right here in our own community who struggle to find affordable housing, a good paying job, a hot meal, a warm bed, and a friend to talk to. Many are veterans and many are supported by your donations to the United Way. With your help, the United Way provides support for programs right here in Alachua County such as Catholic Charities, Alachua County Coalition of Homeless and Hungry, Inc, The Salvation Army, and St Francis House, to name a few. There are likely many others who see veterans in their case management and outreach efforts on a daily basis. Through the Community Investment Fund, these partner agencies are able to leverage your investment and secure state and federal money at an average 3-to-1 match to help lift up our veterans during difficult times. It is, after all, a small contribution we make to a group of people who paid a price too big to re-pay and for that, we thank you.
