Learning to Think Pink
Research demonstrates that an estimated 1 in 5 women battle depression at some point in life. Although depression can occur at any age, studies show that it's most common in women between the ages of 40 and 59, those in the "sandwich" generation, i.e., maintaining the responsibility of work and home while simultaneously raising children and caring for an aging parent.

In response to these alarming statistics, A Woman's Business launched Think Pink, a FREE, peer-based support group for women overcoming battles with stress, anxiety and depression or caring for a loved one who is.  Now in its third year, Think Pink discussion topics include:
  • What is depression?
  •  Who does depression target?
  •  Symptoms and contributing factors of depression.
  •  Phases of depression.
  •  Keys to prevent and/or overcome depression.
  •  When and who to ask for help.
  •  Positive thinking and coping strategies.
  •  How to develop healthy relationships with other women and build a network of support.
The eight-week support group will meet Tuesdays, June 14th through August 2nd from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Willingboro Library.   Seating is limited, so registration is required. To reserve your spot for FREE, call 856-817-6223 or visit www.awomansbusiness.org.  Register by May 27th and be entered into a drawing for a complimentary spa day!

Ready For The Battle
Actress, Mental Health Advocate and Creator of 24 Hour Mind Battle Marcia Myers

According to statistics, more than 80% of those suffering from depression don't seek treatment, often because of the stigma associated with the illness, forcing many to live in shame rather than seek help.  Cue Marcia Myers, an actress, mental health advocate and creator of 24 Hour Mind Battle, a one-woman play highlighting her fight with depression.

A founding member of the Think Pink depression support group, Marcia now travels year-round, utilizing 24 Hour Mind Battle as a platform to bring attention to life with mental illness and connect those in the fight with the resources to overcome.

"In a society where mental illness is often demonized, Think Pink had a great impact on my life, reinforcing the fact that I was not alone and allowing me the freedom to speak openly about the negative thoughts that would bombard my mind during some really dark moments in my life," said Marcia Myers.

Marcia continued, "24 Hour Mind Battle is based on my experience with depression, and its affects upon me, and my family. I wrote the play to help fight the stigma of depression and mental illness in general. Far too many lives have been wiped away as a result of depression, and one life is too many. It's my prayer, that by telling my story, people who battle depression will gain a sense of hope and encouragement to seek the help that is needed."

Marcia will present 24 Hour Mind Battle on Thursday, June 9, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. at the Burlington County Library in Westampton New Jersey.  For more information and to reserve your FREE ticket for the performance, visit www.24HourMindBattle.com.

Hope -vs- Cope
Pastor Kevin C. Brown joined Dr. Chris Winfrey in leading a symposium on the role of faith and forgiveness in overcoming trauma at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Atlanta, Georgia, May 16th-18th.

Entitled " Forgiveness, Trauma & Psychiatry:   The Clinical Relevance From Diverse Faith Perspectives," the symposium bridged conversation between various faith leaders and clinicians with a focus on spiritual and psychiatric implications of cultural issues in response to the tragic shooting at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

"The struggle to forgive is universal," said Kevin C. Brown, pastor of The Perfecting Church.  "And while unforgiveness often serves as both a coping and defense mechanism in the wake of trauma, forgiveness is our only hope for healing from trauma."

Pastor Brown continued, "As one of the most pervasive issues affecting our nation and the world today, The Perfecting Church is committed to Loving Our Cities by offering hope and healing to those battling depression, anxiety and stress, and combatting the shame associated with acute and chronic mental health challenges."

Living in Harmony
2015-2016 Perfecting Chords Students Prepare for their Grand Finale Concert

Last month, Perfecting Chords hosted its grand finale concert at Winslow Township High School to showcase the artistic achievement of its 2015-2016 program participants.   Currently offered in all four elementary schools in the Winslow Township Public School District from September through April, Perfecting Chords is a free, after-school program designed to introduce students to basic music theory, harmony and melody, while building a greater sense of connectedness and community among the students, parents and teachers it serves.

Sandy Anderson, mother of Perfecting Chords students Madison and Emily Anderson remarked, "As a parent of two children who participated in Perfecting Chords for the past three years, I've witnessed my children's personal growth as a result of the program.  Nurturing a love for music and an understanding of its complexity in a fun environment for young children is no easy task, but the program was executed perfectly with love and dedication from some of the best teachers we've been blessed to know.  Perfecting Chords will always hold a place in our hearts and we look forward to what the future has in store for this wonderful program."

Perfecting Chords is now accepting applications from those interested in serving during the 2016-2017 school year.  Applicants must be 16 and older, available between 3 and 6 p.m. four days a week, and share a love of music and children.  For more information, email [email protected] or call 856-817-6223.

For the past several weeks, The Deep End has been discussing what are known as "little gods," the idols we've pursued more than God and made the object of our worship... we've had to take a closer look at who was truly running the show. Are we followers of Christ or are we expecting Him to follow us?
