Volume 193 - Friday May 27th 2016
We get a lot of questions about Eb or D necks!

Which is better?
Which is more common?
How do I tell what my bass is?

So Dave and I grabbed the camera and did a quick video showing how you can tell what your neck is!

Watch the video and then go check out your bass, and be sure to leave a comment on YouTube about what you find with your bass!

Give us a call and lets talk about your next upright bass!  We love what we do and we'd love to do it for you!

Abraham Prescott Double Bass c1830s
Here is an Abraham Prescott double bass, probably from the 1830s, fully restored by Upton Bass about ten years ago.

We believe it was cut down from it's original large pattern with the lower bout truncated. It probably started life very similar to the large 1840s Prescott we also have in the shop.  Shortened to be "easier to live with," it still is a large volume instrument pushing lots of air.  In our restoration the fingerboard projection was modernized and the scroll meticulously rebuilt.

This has been a very enthusiastic jazz instrument since the restoration, but would thrive in other styles. The feel is surprisingly modern and responsive, with the charms and magnetism of a nearly 200 year-old historic double bass.
