A Message from Andrea
Growing partnerships

Over the last two years Schechter has been growing partnerships within the Jewish community and the Greater Hartford community. Networking, learning about and from each other has been enriching for our school. Additionally, meeting and working with other heads of schools  has generated some of the most meaningful and helpful relationships that I have developed.

Several months ago, I had the privilege of meeting with Dan Zittoun, Principal of Hall High School, to share with him the work we do at Schechter, tour our beautiful building, and to show him where so many of his fantastic students began their school careers.

During that meeting, Dan talked about his dream of speaking with parents of elementary school students about what he sees in high school and to provide a perspective on parenting from that lens. We are excited that he will be speaking at Schechter on Tuesday, May 31 at 7:30pm.

We look forward to welcoming you and your friends to an illuminating conversation.

Shabbat Shalom,
Andrea

2016 Ner Tamid is a Huge Success

More than 650 people gathered to recognize Schechter's 45 years of academic excellence at the 2016 Ner Tamid celebration last week at The Bushnell. The event honored the Rosenberg, Rosenberg Toro, and Bricker Families for their commitment and generosity to Schechter and the Greater Hartford Community. Leah Berson was also honored for her years of service to Schechter as the first recipient of the Excellence in Volunteerism Award. The gala  was co-chaired by Schechter parents Lauren Eisen and Elaine Leshem.

The event raised close to $600,000 dollars for the school. "We are so grateful to our donors and business partners for making this event such an enormous success," said Director of Institutional Advancement Jayne Rotter. The event featured Catapult, a dance troupe that came in second place on NBC's America's Got Talent

All proceeds from the event support academic excellence and scholarship at Solomon Schechter Day School.

Hebrew High School junior wins international science contest -
article reprinted from Jewish Ledger
Hebrew High School of New England (HHNE) junior and Solomon Schechter graduate  Yaakov Schectman won the top prize at the Jerusalem Science Contest, sponsored by the Jerusalem College of Technology and the Walder Science Center in Chicago. The international competition aims to encourage a new generation of young Jewish scientists. The topic of this year's contest, in conjunction with the UNESCO International Year of Light, was the science and technology of light, optics and the human eye. This contest began in October 2015 and ended in January 2016.

Each week for ten weeks, Schectman participated in the contest via a weekly series of online lectures, videos, and text study material in both science and related Judaic topics, as well as school-proctored examinations and a final presentation focusing on physics and Judaics. The first nine exams lasted for 50 minutes. The tenth exam was a comprehensive final on all the material. Schectman achieved an overall score of 100.6%.

"We are so proud of Yaakov's achievement," said Rabbi Jeremy Bruce, HHNE's head of school. "To come first in such a rigorous and extensive international scientific and Judaic competition is outstanding and exceptional. It is a testament to his dedication and commitment to academic excellence."

As the top prize winner, Schectman receives a cash award, a free trip to Israel, a four-year scholarship to Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT) and a letter of participation to any college of his choice.  Schechtman says he is eager to travel to Israel and will utilize his trip to tour the JCT campus and all it has to offer.

CAP: HHNE student Yaakov Schectman (2nd from right) receives his award certificate from (l to r) Joel Javit, Dr. Yosef Walder and Rabbi Herschel Weiner, all of the Walder Science Center.

24th Annual Hero Show
This past Thursday was Schechter's 24th annual First Grade Hero Show The show was the culmination of the first graders' unit of study on heroes.  Each student chose a person who made a difference during their  lifetime to make the world a better place. Through their studies and research, the students learned life lessons that will stay  with them forever. They spoke about how their hero inspired them to always do their best.

The students' dressed up like their hero for the show. Each student presented the story of their hero and why they are a hero. This year's show also saw the addition of several new songs. As the class sang Heal the World, the entire audience joined in, waving their arms high in the air. For the finale, the eighth graders joined their first grade reading buddies onstage.

Each child deserves an immense compliment for all the research they did to learn about their hero and to express to the audience the important facts about each.

MS Garden Club
Last week, the middle school garden club donated nearly 70 vegetable plants to the Charter Oak Cultural Center's BOTS Pots program. BOTS Pots works to provide fresh vegetables to food insecure people in Hartford. It does this by distributing beautiful flower pots in which vegetables are grown in public spaces throughout Hartford. BOTS Pots also provides work opportunities for homeless individuals in the community who tend to the plants and ensure that they grow for anyone who needs to harvest the vegetables. Leo Gold, Zachary Sobel-Pressman, Eitan Erlich, Paki Williams, Chase Ben-Kiki, and Harry Gold grew peas, beans, summer squash, tomatoes, lettuce, chives, and bell peppers to donate to this special program.

As soon as this project was completed, the garden club immediately embarked on a new tikkun olam project: helping to weed, design, and plant the Jessie's Garden with our neighbors at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. The vegetables that are grown in this garden will be donated to Loaves and Fishes food pantry in Hartford.

EC 2 Visits Westmoor Park
On Tuesday, the EC 2 class participated in a "Gentle Touch " program at Westmoor Park. The students had the opportunity to get close to a number of cute and very cuddly farm animals, among them a sheep, a goat, an alpaca, a chicken, and a rabbit. It was a special experience to learn about these animals by getting so close to them and having the opportunity to pet them. An exciting highlight of the program was when the horses were let out of the barn to go into the meadow. The first horse took her time meandering out of the gate to graze in the grass, but the second horse surprised everyone by galloping by at top speed!

3rd Graders Dissect Chickens
As a concluding project for their study of the human body systems (skeletal, muscular and circulatory,) third grade students dissected a chicken wing and compared it to a human arm. They focused on the different kinds of joints- ball and socket and hinge, watched and felt the muscles expand and contract, were able to open the smaller bones of the lower wing (radius and ulna) and saw the bone marrow. They worked slowly and carefully to remove the skin from the wing with bandage scissors and observed the tendons and ligaments. One cool fact they learned was that the little wing tip is considered the thumb and the larger tip is the chicken's finger!
