A Message from Council Member
Bryan Frye...
|
When I sat down to write this article, I remembered the attached photo I took at last year's grand opening of Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. For me, the poster headline takes on added meaning because of recent economic development successes. Over the last few months, several internationally known companies have strengthened their commitment to Wichita. These are names the business world knows and other cities covet - Koch Industries, Spirit AeroSystems, FlightSafety, and just this week, Cargill. Couple those investments with significant expansion projects going on at Foley Caterpillar, JR Custom Metals and SNT Media. And don't forget the Wichita State University Innovation Campus building boom. Flyover country? Not anymore. Now, Wichita is the place to be.
In making the announcement about keeping the headquarters of the meat division in Wichita, Cargill vice president Brian Sikes stated, "We chose Wichita because we will thrive here." That's one heck of an endorsement coming from the largest privately held company in the US.
Good things are happening in Wichita. We've always known it. It's time the rest of the world knew it too.
Celebrate the Memorial Weekend safely!

P.s. As a Cowtown board member, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a unique event happening this Saturday called Steam Punk. You really have to see it to believe it. The
creativity and interpretations are incredible. See the link in the newsletter below for more information.

Buffalo Park
Dedication Ceremony
Join Councilman Bryan Frye and other City officials and staff for the dedication of the recent improvements made to Buffalo Park.
The ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 23.
Bring your kids!
The highlight of the improvements is a brand new interactive splash park that is themed after the native Kansas landscape; a new shade shelter with picnic tables; and new restrooms with drinking fountains.
The $1.5 million improvement project is possible due, in part, to a $250,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Water Conservation Rebate Program Maintains Participation
City Council authorized $100,000 in February 2016 to continue to encourage Wichitans to incorporate high-efficiency, water-saving devices and appliances into their homes. As of May 13, 2016 only $15,012 remains for this program.
Approximately 40 applications are being received each week and staff anticipates
that funding will be exhausted within the next 30 days.
The results of a recently published Water Research Foundation study indicate that the 23 utilities in the sample showed a decline of 22% in average annual indoor household water use since the last such study was published in 1999. The study reports "the reductions in household water use are largely due to more efficient fixtures and appliances and are not the result of either occupancy or behavior".

Steam Punk Day at Cowtown
Visitors to Old Cowtown Museum are used to seeing the Victorian era portrayed true to form, but when Steampunk Day arrives on
Saturday May 28, they will experience a re-imagined, more advanced 19th century straight out of a Jules Verne or H.G. Wells novel.
The sixth annual Steampunk Day, sponsored by the imaginary "Tesla and Lovecraft Mail Order Catalogue Company", includes "new" products and inventions, music and dance performances, airship "demonstrations" and unique shopping opportunities.
What is Steampunk? Simply put, Steampunk is Victorian science fiction that takes modern inventions - the Internet, weaponry, clocks - and re-imagines how they would look had they been created with Victorian technology and materials.
There will be demonstrations and panels with Airship Devil's Blight and Airship Vindus. We will also have a cannon duel and the Scallywags will entertain all. And Fireshark Gaming will allow you to literally step into
the game!
Come dressed in your best costume and be entered in our costume contest. Or you
can join in the beard and mustache competition!
So come on out to Cowtown on May 28 and step into a whole new world of adventure!

website.

Kid Power Cafe
This summer Kid Power has teamed up with Wichita Public Schools to be the mascot of the Federal Summer Food Program.
Kansas is ranked 48 out of 50 states for participation. Since Kid Power Cares, Inc. was formed to help Give Kids the Power to Feel Great we think this community coalition with WPS will be an opportunity for the 50,000 students in the school district
to have more knowledge about the program through a new name and logo.
If you know of any children, ages 1 thru 18,
have a nutritious summer!

Nobody wants to have a heart attack. So people can fall into the trap of looking for
new-fangled ways to decrease their risk of a heart attack. They may look for the
newest pill, or the newest supplement, in order to prevent a heart attack.
As a physician, I routinely assessed my patients' "risk factors," or aspects of health
that contribute to the risk for heart attacks and strokes. Risk factors include age,
family history of early heart disease, blood pressure, smoking, weight, cholesterol
and diabetes.
While you can't do anything about your age or your family's history, you CAN affect all
of the other risk factors. Do two things: Don't smoke! And Walk!
Walking decreases blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and diabetes. Aim for walking 30 minutes a day, 5 days per week. Even 15 minutes per day is helpful, so if you don't think you can manage 30 minutes, start with less. Short on time? Take short walks on your work breaks or park farthest from the entrance when out shopping.
You don't have to go to a gym, or run, to get the benefits. Just put on your shoes
and walk. Wichita has an abundance of parks and walking paths to explore if you
wish. There's probably one near you. Or you can just walk in your
neighborhood. Where you walk doesn't matter.
Just Walk! Check out
www.BikeWalkWichita.org
for resources and events.
