This Thursday:

Dating Like an Adult (An Not a High School Student)
Weekly Message:

One of my good friends always has weird and incredible dating stories. We ate lunch recently and ended up discussing the difference between dating like adults vs. dating like high schoolers. While most of us still end up feeling like we're all just making it up as we go along, we came up with some characteristics of what it's like to date like an adult.

Expressing Emotions & Needs
Where did we get the message it's embarrassing to express our feelings for someone? Or to be shy about expressing our needs in a relationship? It's healthy to express ourselves! And, it often forces us to become more aware of how God made us tick! (...Which is never a bad thing!)

Compatibility
Compatibility is the bread and butter of relationships, right? The whole dating process is about figuring out how two people fit. When we realize we're not compatible, dealing with rejection is so much easier. This releases us from interpreting rejection as a negative thing about ourselves!

Honesty
A friend of mine recently broke up with her boyfriend but wasn't honest about why. He was in a rough mental place and she was worried she would make it worse if she told him the truth... but because she wasn't up-front about the reasons, how he acted after the breakup came back to bite her. Honesty is important in all aspects of relationships!

Go with your gut
If something feels off, it probably is. One of the guys my friend was talking with starting using a lot of possessive language toward her. It made her wonder if they had different views of independence and how healthy relationships work.

Know Thyself
All of this requires a pretty healthy relationship with yourself! When you're in tune with God and with the you that God has made you to be, you're in a good spot to date like an adult! All of these things are easily practiced in all life's relationships, not just romantic ones.
