Week 2: 2 Corinthians 2:1-10
A Community of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is at the very heart of the Christian community. The New Creation Community is a place of forgiveness and forgiving. The unconditional love and forgiveness we have receive through Jesus is the Good News of the gospel.  The community is also called to be a forgiving community, modeling Jesus' forgiveness with our own. Forgiving is not always easy, however, and sometimes we need God's grace and power to help us lift off the burdens we carry.

The New Creation Community

May 22    A Community of Compassion               Text: 2 Corinthians 1:1-11

May 29    A Community of Forgiveness               Text: 2 Corinthians 2:1-10

June 5     A Community of Imperfect Treasures   Text: 2 Corinthians 4:1-15

June 12   A Community of Faith                  Text: 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 5:10

June 19   A Community of Reconciliation            Text: 2 Corinthians 5:11-2

June 26   A Community of Generosity                Text: 2 Corinthians 8:1-15

What is the shape of the community of Christ? How do we live faithfully, both to Christ and to our neighbor? In the midst the tensions and conflicts that surround the writing of 2 Corinthians, the letter is all about being the community of Christ.  While the accusations and dissatisfactions of many of the Corinthians (fueled by the Outsiders, or the "Super Apostles") center on Paul, the Apostle refuses to "take the bait" of his opponents.  By deftly steering the discussion to be less about Paul and more about Jesus' activity and presence within the community, Paul begins to sketch out the outlines of what it means to live as part of the New Creation Community in Christ Jesus.

Come and have breakfast. John 21:12

With the coming of summer, Joy's Faith Family Breakfasts will resume.  Our first breakfast on Sunday, June 5, will be hosted by the Council, but the summer's wide open for additional chefs.

Faith Family Breakfasts began a number of years ago as an informal way to meet new folks and catch up with other; fellowship with food.  And Joy is all about food!  Volunteers sign up to host, and meals can be as simple as cereal and milk, or as complicated as you'd like - the kitchen is yours to command and you have a willing audience.  Joy will provide the paper goods - plates, bowls, napkins, etc. - and flatware, and the tables will remain set up in the Narthex until Labor Day weekend.

This is a great opportunity to try out new recipes before the guests arrive or to share those successes. Look for the sign-up sheet on the OPPORTUNITIES bulletin board outside the Sanctuary.

There is a sign-up sheet on the OPPORTUNITIES board in the Narthex where you can indicate a week you'd like to help.  Murray, Joy's trusty steed...er, lawn mower... is at your disposal, or you can bring your own if you prefer.

Contact Nancy Hemsath at 696-6815, or  [email protected] if you have any questions.  And thanks in advance for your help!

A Silent Auction is planned for the beginning of October this year.  Lots more details will be coming, but we wanted to give you plenty of time for thinking, crafting, designing, creating and working on Silent Auction items for it.  In the past, we have had some pretty amazing items for auction and we are hoping for lots of those again this fall; we know you love them!

School is almost out, and with that end the Free and Reduced Breakfasts and Lunch program at schools that many of our Eagle River and Chugiak young people rely on will end as well.

This summer let's focus on:
  • Proteins: Peanut Butter, Spam (very popular), Tuna, Chili, etc.
  • Breakfast Cereals: Especially more healthy options.
  • Canned Soup (other than Ramen):  Easy to make, Good balance between protein and carbs.
  • Box milks: Doesn't need refrigeration.
Little Free Library Donations
Scott Hobbs is collecting books and maps for the Little Free Library he is installing at Joy. The theme is  "Reading will take you places!"   He needs books for all ages of readers to fill the library--preschool, elementary, teen, adult.  He needs maps to decorate the library--think road maps, Mileposts, National Geographic inserts, wall maps, etc.  Donation boxes are located in the narthex.  Thank you for contributing to help Scott's project!
The official installation ceremony will be held later this spring.

Lutheran Social Services - June Newsletter
Summer is upon us and this means the busiest time of the year for the Food Pantry.  We  traditionally see an increase in the number of households seeking help when school is out. This year we anticipate a larger spike as more students were participating in school meal programs this past school year.  So we need your help.  Anything you can do to help us stock our shelves will be greatly appreciated.  Items like canned meats, soups, ravioli, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruits, cereals or macaroni and cheese.

HUGSS (help us give school supplies) distribution will be August 16th at East High School.  This will be our 16th year and we anticipate serving close to 4,500 students.  This year we greatly need your help.  We had to use most of funding for purchasing the backpacks so we are short of funds for school supplies.  You can help us by purchasing school supplies and dropping them off at your congregation or here at LSSA.  Or you can make a financial contribution and we will do the shopping for you.  Also we are looking for gently used coats for Coats for Kids event that will be distributed at The Salvation Army in late September.  Coats can be dropped off at Fireweed Cleaners or at the LSSA office. We will need volunteers for set-up on August 15th and for distribution on August16th

Thanks to everyone who helped with the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 14th.  Citywide over 28,000 pounds were gathered and LSSA received 2,500 pounds of that total.  Special thanks to those who helped sort food at the Food Bank.

The LSSA Grazers had a good time at the Annual Visitors Industry's Charity Walk on May 13thth.  Thank you for participating and representing LSSA at this annual event.  We will know in late June the total dollars raised for LSSA.

We ask that you keep our ministry and the many clients we serve in your prayers.  As Paul teaches us in his letter to the Philippians - Prayer and joy go together, that is, when we spend much time praying for others.  It's a joy to pray for others!

Together caring for others,
Alan Budahl
