Pentecost no bkgrnd

May 26, 2016 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Second Sunday after Pentecost.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and David Jackson will preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

Ordinary Time
Counted Time of the Church Year

Most of the Seasons of the Christian Church Year are organized around the two major festivals that mark sacred time, Christmas and Easter. The Christmas Season encompasses the time of preparation during Advent and the celebration of the Twelve Days of Christmas and Epiphany in early January (the 6th). The Easter Season encompasses the time of preparation during the 40 weekdays of Lent and Holy Week, and is linked with Pentecost Sunday 50 days later. While there are other individual holy days within the church year, these seasons mark the movement of sacred time within the church calendar.

The rest of the year following Epiphany and Pentecost is known as Ordinary Time. Rather than meaning "common" or "mundane," this term comes from the word "ordinal," which simply means counted time (First Sunday after Pentecost, etc.), which is probably a better way to think of this time of the year.  Counted time after Pentecost always begins with Trinity Sunday (the first Sunday after Pentecost) and ends with Christ the King Sunday (last Sunday before the beginning of Advent).

The sanctuary color for Ordinary Time is dark green, although other shades of green are commonly used. Green has traditionally been associated with new life and growth. Even in Hebrew in the Old Testament, the same word for the color "green" also means "young."  In Christian tradition, green came to symbolize the life of the church following Pentecost, as well as symbolizing the hope of new life in the resurrection.

Saint of the Week: Saint Augustine of Canterbury, Bishop and Missionary

26 May 605

The Christian Church was established in the British Isles well before 300 AD. However, in the fifth century Britain was invaded by non-Christian Germanic tribes: the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. They conquered the native Celtic Christians (despite resistance by, among others, a leader whose story has come down to us, doubtless with some exaggeration, as that of King Arthur), or drove them north and west into Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. From these regions Celtic Christian missionaries returned to England to preach the Gospel to the heathen invaders.

Meanwhile, the Bishop of Rome, Gregory the Great, decided to send missionaries from Rome, a group of monks led by their prior, Augustine. They arrived in Kent (the southeast corner of England) in 597, and the king, whose wife was a Christian, allowed them to settle and preach. Their preaching was outstandingly successful, the people were hungry for the Good News of salvation, and they made thousands of converts in a short time.

In 601 the king himself was converted and baptized. Augustine was consecrated bishop and established his headquarters at Canterbury. From his day to the present, there has been an unbroken succession of archbishops of Canterbury.

WISH LIST

A 32-42 Inch flat screen Television

Having a television is essential for the way I teach.  I use technology, and PowerPoint, video clips and YouTube to teach.  I have found this use of technology to be effective for really all ages.

If you are thinking of replacing your 32-42 inch (or larger) flat screen, consider donating it to Emmanuel.

Thanks, Ellen+

We are in the process of hiring a new church sexton.  Until that happens be aware that you may not have everything set up as you normally would.  We are going to need everyone's help to pitch in and throw away trash if you see it and report any major concerns to the church office.

If you have time and would like to help please let Judy know.  This will be a learning curve for all of us. So I'm praying for patience, cooperation, and a great new sexton to come our way.

If you need someone to pick up any items, please contact the church office or Penny Longo at (708) 275-5028.  We need everyone's help to make this year's garage sale a big success!
