GaTech Researchers Help Atlanta Communities Make Strides in Fixing Sidewalks


 

Georgia Tech researchers under Dr. Randall Guensler have been working to develop a toolkit of smartphone and online apps, known as the Sidewalk SentryTM and Sidewalk ScoutTM, that constitute a comprehensive sidewalk asset management system. The apps allow anyone with access to inventory sidewalks, assess their condition, and prioritize improvements for their community. [Read more]

STRIDE-Affiliated Students Win 2015 ITS Florida Scholarships 

Two STRIDE-affiliated Ph.D. students were awarded the 2015 ITS Florida Anne Brewer Scholarship from ITS Florida: Homa Fartash and Shahadat Iqbal. Homa Fartash, a Ph.D. candidate in transportation engineering at Florida International University, is working on a funded research project titled as "Guidelines for the Evaluation of Ramp Signaling Deployments in a Real-Time Operations Environment" under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Hadi. Atlanta Journal-Constitution Invites STRIDE-Affiliated Student as Guest Columnist  

Alice Grossman, a graduate student at GaTech focusing on sustainable transportation, was a guest columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution with an op-ed on the needs for better sidewalks in Atlanta.The sidewalk issue is not new to Grossman as she was fully involved in a STRIDE-funded project on "Automated Sidewalk Quality & Safety Assessment" with Dr. Randall Guensler. GaTech Students Pave the Road for a Public Transportation Initiative

Georgia Tech students have been at the forefront of a movement sweeping through the Atlanta public transportation system.  Public transportation in Atlanta goes by the name of MARTA, and the initiative, called the "MARTA Army" is a grassroots organization that has gained traction among riders/users and enthusiasts over the last few months.  Anyone can join the group and participate to implement small projects on a large scale to improve the ridership experience... Meet the 2016 STRIDE Interns
 
The new interns for Summer 2016 have been selected and began their program on May 19. STRIDE interns have a unique opportunity to do their internship at any of the universities within the STRIDE consortium. During this paid internship, students are paired up with a faculty adviser and work on active research projects.  The program ends in late July, and students are responsible for delivering a final report and giving final presentations related to project they worked on. Student Spotlight: Samaneh Khazraeian, Ph.D. Student at FIU 

Samaneh Khazraeian, a Ph.D. civil engineering student at Florida International University (FIU), is ready to turn transportation chaos into organized circulation.  Living in the Iranian capital of Tehran, Khazraeian witnessed huge crowds moving all day long.  "Circulation in big cities, especially at peak hours, is chaos," Khazraeian said. "The lack of expertise in these cities is evident of such a situation."   [Read more] .
Student Spotlight: Gustavo Riente de Andrade, Ph.D. Student at UF                   
 
Gustavo Riente de Andrade is a graduate student in the transportation engineering program at University of Florida (UF). He was highly motivated to pursue his doctoral studies after meeting several transportation faculty at a UF-sponsored workshop in 2010. While attending Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos in Brazil, de Andrade flew to Orlando, Fla., to attend a workshop on the Highway Capacity Manual and was introduced to Dr. Lily Elefteriadou, professor and director of the STRIDE Center.  [Read more]

Upcoming STRIDE Workshop Introduce Planning Tools for Linking Rural Development and Transportation

Dr. Brian J. Morton of UNC-Chapel Hill and Dr. John Poros of MSU will be co-teaching a technical workshop related to their STRIDE-funded project "A Regional Land-Use Transportation Decision Support Tool for Mississippi" (project #2012-003S) during the National Regional Transportation Conference on June 13-15, 2016 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  [Read more]
ATM Workshop on FREEVAL-DSS

The next workshop on FREEVAL-DSS will be helld at the ITE Conference in Chicago on June 26, 2016.   A previous workshop was held on April 1, 2016, during the UTC Conference for the Southeastern Region, which took place at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The workshop was led by Drs. Nagui Rouphail and Behzad Aghdashi, both of the Institute for Transportation Research & Education (ITRE) at North Carolina State University (NCSU). STRIDE Co-Sponsors Girls in Science & Engineering Day at UAB

For the second year in a row, the STRIDE Center has supported a K-12 initiative at the University of Alabama at Birmingham aimed at engaging middle school girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
