Church of the Advent to Hold Final Eucharist
Sunday, May 29

Church of the Advent, an Episcopal Church in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, will hold its final Eucharist on May 29, junior warden Tim van Alstyne announced on Sunday evening.

"The Church of the Advent finds that there is no practical way forward for this congregation to exist," van Alstyne wrote to Bishop Jeffrey D. Lee. "Our current plan is to celebrate the last Eucharist together as a congregation next week; after that, we plan to meet for Morning Prayer for some weeks in June as we discern our options as a community."

Wear Orange for Gun Violence Awareness
Support National Gun Violence Awareness Day June 2

On June 2, people across the country will  wear orange as a sign of their commitment to diminishing the scourge of gun violence that besets the United States. The movement was born in mourning on the south side of Chicago, and Bishop Jeffrey Lee is asking members of the diocese to give it their support.

"Fifteen-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot to death in our city just a week after marching in President Obama's second inaugural parade," Lee said. "Her friends decided to wear orange, the color that hunters wear to keep themselves safe, in her memory. We owe it to Hadiya and the young people who launched this movement to take whatever steps we can to help protect our fellow citizens from gun violence. Wearing orange on June 2, which would have been Hadiya's 19th birthday, is one such step."

In Chicago, Everytown for Gun Safety will host the Wear Orange 2016 Party for Peace in Harold Washington Playlot Park on June 2 at 4:30 pm. Learn more and RSVP.
Magdalene House Chicago Leaders Visit Elgin

Last week, the Rev. Amity Carrubba and Rose Cicero visited Elgin to raise awareness about their effort to open a home for women who have survived trafficking, prostitution, addiction and homelessness--called a Magdalene House--in the Chicago area.

"It takes a community to fail these women and it will take a community to heal these women," said Carrubba to a gathering of retired women at St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church.
