DIGGING DEEPER: MISUSED VERSES IN THE BIBLE SUMMER 2016
|
SUMMER SERMON SERIES
We often hear people quoting the Bible to fit a particular argument, or to prove their faith to others. Maybe you have done that yourself. Sometimes it works, but sometimes when the quote is taken out of it's original context, it ends up far from the intended meaning. Sometimes, people even quote the Bible...only to be told or to discover that the "quote" is not actually from the Bible at all.
This summer we are going to be "digging deeper" into some of these quotes to see just what the Bible says about them. This is going to be an exciting, but also challenging theme, as it may challenge some of our assumptions of our faith. In the schedule below, can you find the problems with each of our titles, taken from popular quotes today? If not, do not fear! We intend for this theme not to tear down, but to build up and lift up the Gospel and share the good news for us and for all in Jesus Christ.
June 5
:
All Scripture is Inspired By God:
2 Timothy 3:16
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness
June 12
:
Anything you ask for in my name:
John 14:13-14
I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it
June 19:
Train a child in the way they should go
: Proverbs 22:6
Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.
June 25
:
Money is the Root of all Evil:
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

BISHIP EATON'S WEBCAST TODAY
|
Join a group of us to watch the latest webcast from our national synod: A Place for All. This webcast will include a conversation with panelists exploring the question of racism in our churches. As members of the ELCA, we believe that we are a church that belongs to Christ. There is a place for everyone here. Yet contentment, fear or racism - individual and institutional - can hold us back from being the diverse, welcoming church that Christ calls us to be. Look around our congregation. Do we need to discuss this?
Our presiding bishop, The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, will join with The Rev. Ruben Duran, The Rev. Matt Stuhlmuller, and Mikka McCracken with Lutheran World Hunger, to talk about our response to racism. Join us for stimulating discussion (and a snack!) Wednesday, May 25, 6-7 p.m. in the Patience classroom at Spirit of Joy (4501 South Lemay Avenue, NW corner of Harmony and Lemay). If you are unable to come watch with us, we invite you to watch the webcast (live or recorded) at ELCA.org/webcast or at Facebook.com/Lutherans.
Call Marjorie (226-0634) if you have questions.

HABITIAT FOR HUMANITY - OSLC DAY OF SERVICE
|
On Saturday, June 18, which is also Father's Day weekend, we have been invited by Habitat for Humanity to participate in a special day of service involving members of our congregation working on a home with the family who will live there. This home is being built as a partnership with the Strodtman family and it is one of the new Avondale cottages located in the Ridgewood Hills neighborhood in southwest Fort Collins. While OLSC is helping with partial financial support of the construction, we have been asked to devote a hands-on day in assisting with the completion of this home. Prior construction experience is not necessary, because many tasks are available regardless of skill level. It is likely that everyone working on this build will learn some new skills, in addition to the satisfaction of helping a family in this this valuable cause. If you would like to participate, or if you would like more information, please contact Jerry Freier by phone 970-482-6163, or by email at
[email protected]
.
Sign-up sheets will be available in the Narthex. please add your name if you can help us build a new home for the Strodtman family on June 18th.
