View our three minute video for a brief overview of our clinical services, including a tour of our facilities designed especially for children and adolescents. We were pleased to launch the video at the Women Helping Women luncheon on May 13 (see below).  The video was produced with thanks to our good friends at the Business Record and Click! Photography.

We also extend sincere gratitude to two courageous former clients who were willing to tell their story on tape so that others may be inspired. Kim and Ellie, thank you.

Wow!

Walk with Mark fundraising update (as of May 19, 2016): $13,900.75. Thank you, amazing supporters!

Mark Minear, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center, walked across Iowa Hwy 30, from river to river, in April and May 2016 to raise awareness and funds for mental health counseling assistance for men and boys. Why? Because men and boys are less likely to seek counseling, and more likely to complete suicide. Mark wants to change that. Redefining Aging, a conversation series - register for more chats!

Thank you to everyone who came to help us launch this series through our wine and cheese gathering on April 14.

We are hosting three more conversations and you are welcome to join us. Not a class, not a support group, this conversation series will explore ways to reframe common misconceptions about a universal experience: growing older. While pop culture tends to focus only on the losses that come in this time of life, we will consider the significant opportunities.

Participants will discover new ways to express their values, creativity and spirituality - in a joyful and supportive community.

What is pastoral counseling?

This is the first in a series of articles on pastoral counseling and spiritual direction. While this introductory article will explore the idea of "pastoral counseling," the rest of the series will profile individual counselors and spiritual directors at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center.

Pastoral counseling is not that different from other counseling or therapy. Counseling, including pastoral counseling, is a way of dealing with personal or relationship concerns, issues, or problems that a person encounters in their life. Adding the word pastoral to counseling adds a sense of openness to airing spiritual questions, and pastoral counselors may have a greater comfort level with dealing with those questions though all clinicians can be attuned to the spiritual. An important note to go with pastoral counseling is  that there is openness to the spiritual questions being asked but the client has to ask the questions because the counselor will not automatically assume the client wants to talk about matters of faith.

Dear Reader,

I am so lucky to have this view from my office. Lately I've been able to open up the windows to let in sounds of the birds and breeze. I love that I can work in a small, dark, lamp-lit office while simultaneously enjoy the big blinding outside. Feels like a best-of-both kind of thing. My 19 year old daughter recently asked if I'm ever happy because I always seem to want a little bit more. She said: "Can't you just like what you have?" (It was in a restaurant whereby I asked the wait staff for a different table with a better view, and then noticed another table with yet a better view.) I told her she made a good point but didn't think to mention that I actually do like my office just the way it is, though I'm old enough to know things never stay the same.

Also, I'm struck by how much this office window resembles the cover photo we chose for the 2015 annual report (see top post). It was an accident. Maybe the idea of examining insides and outsides of offices, hearts and brains has been an unwitting metaphor for this spring. Or maybe I am simply drawn to both dark and light.

It has been a busy, wonderful time at the Center and I hope that this newsletter gives you a small window (door?) into (out to?) some of the amazing things that we are doing together. Thank you for your interest and support. And thank you for this incredible privilege to communicate the Center's commitment to counseling and education.

All best,
