Water tour will explore the Platte and Colorado River basins
|
Registration will soon close for the annual water and natural resources tour, hosted by the Nebraska Water Center and the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District. Tour participants will travel through Colorado's central Front Range area and into the interior of the Rocky Mountains June 14-16. A stop in the Denver area will focus on growing urban water demands stemming from rapidly expanding population, industry and recreation. To make a reservation, email

NSF grant to support development of new phenotyping instrument |
Increased yields and crop stress tolerance are critical to addressing the world's food security challenges. A team of University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers, including Water for Food Institute Faculty Fellow Harkamal Walia (pictured on the far right), is developing a tool to better identify plant characteristics for improved crop performance through a new grant from the National Science Foundation.

A study conducted by the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in partnership with Embrapa and the University of Nebraska, evaluated the efficiency of sugarcane production in Brazil to help determine the level of yield gains possible on existing land.

Prizes to young talent applied to sustainable water management

The BotÃn Foundation in Spain will award three prizes for outstanding innovations, ideas, projects and technologies developed by young professionals which have produced positive results for sustainable water management.
The call is open to researchers, technologists, social entrepreneurs, activists and journalists born after Jan. 1, 1976. Apply by July 31.

Nebraska Water Center symposium and water law conference | Oct. 20-21
|
The Nebraska Water Center's annual water symposium is Thursday, Oct. 20, followed by a jointly sponsored NWC/University of Nebraska College of Law water law conference on Friday, Oct. 21. Both events will be held at Nebraska Innovation Campus. Though planning is just beginning, the symposium will feature presentations on water basins and panel discussions centered on the Upper and Lower Platte River, Republican, Blue and Niobrara Rivers.
