A COURSE IN MIRACLES
CH 13 "FROM PERCEPTION TO KNOWLEDGE"
IV. RELEASE AND RESTORATION

27 Now it is given you to heal and teach, to make what will be now. As yet it is not now. The Son of God believes that he is lost in guilt, alone in a dark world where pain is pressing everywhere upon him from without. When he has looked within and seen the radiance there, he will remember how much his Father loves him. And it will seem incredible that he has ever thought his Father loved him not and looked upon him as condemned. The moment that you realize guilt is insane, wholly unjustified, and wholly without reason, you will not fear to look upon the Atonement and accept it wholly.

WHAT IS IAMBIC PENTAMETER?

Now we review again, this time aware
we are preparing for the second part
of learning how the truth can be applied.
Today we will begin to concentrate
on readiness for what will follow next.
Such is our aim for this review and for
the lessons following. Thus we review
the recent lessons and their central thoughts
in such a way as will facilitate
the readiness which we would now achieve.|

There is a central theme which unifies
each step in the review we undertake.
It can be simply stated in these words:

" My mind holds only what I think with God."

This is a fact. And represents the truth
of What you are and What your Father is.
It is this Thought by Which the Father gave
   creation to the Son, establishing
the Son as co-creator with Himself.
It is this Thought Which fully guarantees
salvation to the Son. For in his mind
no thoughts can dwell but those his Father shares.
Lack of forgiveness blocks this Thought from his
awareness. Yet It is forever true.|

Let us begin our preparation with
some understanding of the many forms
in which the lack of true forgiveness may
be carefully concealed. Because they are
illusions, they are not perceived to be
but what they are; defenses which protect
your unforgiving thoughts from being seen
and recognized. Their purpose is to show
you something else, and hold correction off
through self-deception made to take its place.|

And yet your mind holds only what you think
with God. Your self-deceptions cannot take
the place of truth. No more than can a child
who throws a stick into the ocean change
the coming in and going out of tides,
the warming of the water by the sun,
the silver of the moon on it by night.
So do we start each practice period
in this review with readying our mind
to understand the lessons that we read
and see the meaning which they offer us.|

Begin each day with time devoted to
the preparation of your mind to learn
what each idea you will review that day
can offer you in freedom and in peace.
Open your mind and clear it of all thoughts
that would deceive, and let this Thought alone
engage it fully and remove the rest:

" My mind holds only what I think with God."

Five minutes with this Thought will be enough
to set the day along the lines which God
appointed, and to place His Mind in charge
of all the thoughts you will receive that day.|
They will not come from you alone, for they
will all be shared with Him. And so each one
will bring the message of His Love to you,
returning messages of yours to Him.
So will communion with the Lord of Hosts
be yours, as He Himself has willed it be.
And as His Own completion joins with Him,
so will He join with you who are complete
as you unite with Him and He with you.|

   After your preparation, merely read
each of the two ideas assigned to you
to be reviewed that day. Then close your eyes
and say them slowly to yourself. There is
no hurry now, for you are using time
for its intended purpose. Let each word
shine with the meaning God has given it
as it was given to you through His Voice.
Let each idea that you review today
give you the gift which He has laid in it
for you to have of Him. And we will use
no format for our practicing but this:|

Each hour of the day, bring to your mind
the Thought with which the day began, and spend
a quiet moment with It. Then repeat
the two ideas you practice for the day
unhurriedly, with time enough to see
the gifts which they contain for you, and let
them be received where they were meant to be.|
We add no other thoughts, but let them be
the messages they are. We need no more
than that to give us happiness and rest
   and endless quiet, perfect certainty,
and all our Father wills that we receive
as the inheritance we have of Him.

Each day of practicing, as we review,
we close as we began, repeating first
the Thought that made the day a special time
   of blessing and of happiness for us;
and through our faithfulness restored the world
from darkness to the light, from grief to joy,
from pain to peace, from sin to holiness.|
God offers thanks to you who practice thus
the keeping of His Word. And as you give
your mind to the ideas for the day
again before you sleep, His gratitude
surrounds you with the peace wherein He willed
you be forever, and are learning now
to claim again as your inheritance.

ACIM Edmonton - Sarah's Reflections
ACIM Edmonton, CA
LESSON 146
Review IV ~ Lesson 131 and Lesson 132

Sarah's Commentary:

These two thoughts go together, because to seek the truth is to stop looking to the world for what we seem to be seeking: love, safety, immortality, permanence, and satisfaction. I thought that the world was a place for me to achieve goals that would bring me a great deal of satisfaction and purpose to my life. My theme song when I was a young professional was, "Dream the Impossible Dream." I loved what that song conveyed about the world being my oyster. Later, I came to realize how impossible it really was with regard to the achievement of the things I thought were important in the world. It isn't that I didn't achieve my dreams, because in many ways I did. It is just that ultimately I did not achieve that deep experience of happiness and peace I thought should come with each achievement. Any euphoria I felt was short lived. Instead, in the end, I was left with the feeling there had to be more.

As Jesus reminds us, "You do not really want the world you see, for it has disappointed you since time began. The homes you built have never sheltered you. The roads you made have led you nowhere, and no city that you built has withstood the crumbling assault of time." (T. 13.VII.3.1-3)(ACIM OE T.12.VII.61) Later in this chapter, he says, "Everything the ego tells you that you need will hurt you. For although the ego urges you again and again to get, it leaves you nothing, for what you get it will demand of you." (T.13.VII.11.1-2)(ACIM OE T.12.VII.69) He tells us to leave our needs to Him, and when we do, "He will supply them with no emphasis at all upon them." (T.13.VII.13.2)(ACIM OE T.12.VII.71) It reminds me of the teaching in the Bible that says, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all else will be added unto you." The point of the Lesson is that we will seek because that is what we came here to do, but if we seek the things of this world, it will leave us disappointed. When we seek for the Kingdom, everything will be given us. There are only two choices. Either we seek for nothing of value the world has to offer, or we seek for what we already have been given, which is our innocence where we uncover the peace and joy within.

When we follow the dictates of the ego, our time here is spent on always seeking, but never finding. Regardless of what we seem to be doing in the world, in terms of our jobs or the roles or activities in the world, the only really important use of time is for our awakening, for recognizing the truth of who we are and why we are here. When we come to that realization, we will no longer wish to seek for what has no value, but instead seek for the truth. It is the only purpose here and the only one that will bring us what we really desire. The irony is what we are seeking for is what we already have and what we already are.

Does this mean we have to give up on our dreams? Does this mean we can't have any goals in the world? Does this mean we shouldn't make money? Does this mean we can't pursue a special relationship? Absolutely not! Jesus does not lay down any rules or dictates about what to do. The Course does not provide rules for how we should behave. It only helps us to look at what we are thinking. He is simply gently showing us the results of our endeavours in the world, and helping us to see where our real happiness lies.

This teaching is not about what we do, but what is in our minds in the doing. However, as we undertake our pursuits in the world, we are encouraged to increasingly recognize these things are substitutes for our real search. What is under all our searching is our desire for peace and for joy. We all want to be happy and we think we know where our happiness lies, but we are deceived. Jesus reminds us we don't know our own best interests. Yes, we can still do everything we choose to do in the world as long as we still feel there is value here. We are not asked to sacrifice anything. Eventually, we will come to the place where we realize there is nothing of value here. Then there is no sacrifice because the things we thought we valued simply drop away. They no longer hold our interest.

If our deep desire is to awaken from this dream and remember who we are, we must undertake the mind training to bring about the deep peace we seek. We must question what everything is for. Purpose is such a big part of this teaching. The purpose of our worldly goals is to keep us more and more invested in the world. The Holy Spirit's purpose is to teach us that there is nothing of value in the world. In fact, the world is illusory and thus has no reality. He shows us everything we made can be used for a different purpose when given to the Holy Spirit for His interpretation. Jesus urges us to ask in everything, what is it for? When we entrust our happiness to the Holy Spirit, He will use everything to benefit our awakening. In other words, our special relationships, our job, our talents, and all our activities can become a backdrop for that purpose. For example, our special relationships can now be used by the Holy Spirit for the undoing of the guilt in our minds by taking the projections we have put onto others and placing them on the inner altar for healing.

Yesterday I was thinking of a friend who is estranged from me. It has been painful for me to lose this friendship. Over the years I have made several attempts to connect, but all to no avail. I recognized that our falling out was as a result of my giving her feedback about what I saw as her issues. I had believed friendship meant we could be very open and honest with each other, but she was offended by my comments. She became angry, defensive and ended the relationship. It was painful to me, as we had been exceedingly close for many years. On further reflection, I saw that what I hated about her was her self-pity and weakness. She had a lot of fear about her future and complained and worried excessively about money. I admired her for her strength and her abilities, as she had a very senior position and was very capable in that role. In many ways, she was my mentor and my role model. Clearly her fears reflected my own. I was not aware at that time of my own self-attacking thoughts and instead projected them onto her. I did not want to experience my own fears and thought I could fix them in her. What I saw as helpful feedback was all my own self-attack thoughts projected onto her. I had rationalized that I was being helpful to her, but it was not the truth. I had not been willing to look at my own mind and to take responsibility for my own thoughts. I find it takes great courage and honesty to look within, but our safety lies in our defencelessness. Only then can we know our own invulnerability.

The Holy Spirit clearly brought to my mind that what I judged in her was what I was afraid of in me. All He needed from me was my willingness to look. I hated my own weakness, my own fears, and my own victimhood. This is where the healing needed to be. All the time I spent trying to re-establish a relationship with her, I had never looked within. Forgiveness requires the willingness to take responsibility for our own guilt. There is no one outside our own minds. In spite of all this awareness brought to me through this Course, I had hidden from myself what the real problem was. The guilt must be seen for what it is if healing is to occur. No, the relationship may never be established again in form, but the real cause of the problem must be seen for what it is and not the way the ego has set it up. Whatever the situation, it all starts in our own minds. "I am responsible for what I see. I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide upon the goal I would achieve. And everything that seems to happen to me I ask for, and receive as I have asked." (T.21.II.2.3)(ACIM OE T.21.III.15)

Jesus recognizes that we are seekers. "For this you came, and you will surely do the thing you came for," (W.131.3.2) but we have choice. The choice is to search in the world for our happiness or to pursue the goal of seeking truth; and it is reassuring to know we can't fail. No one can fail. The end for all of us is certain, which is our ultimate awakening to who we truly are. Why does he tell us it is certain? He tells us this because it has already been accomplished. All that is required is our acceptance. In the meantime, Jesus says we should be glad we are searchers. It is this restless desire to know the truth that keeps us seeking for the answers to our questions. In each of us is the echo of a forgotten song, no matter how hidden it may seem to be. When we tune in to it, we will want the whole melody. It is the Call in our minds to remember who we are.

Yes, we all dilly-dally on this journey. We get off track. We deceive ourselves. We continue to believe there is something in the world we still want. We delay. We think the next job will make us happier. We believe more money will do it, or a new car, or a new relationship. Each of these choices we make can be the impetus for correction of our misperceptions when we realize the answers to our lives are not in the things of this world. For some of us, it may take longer, but time is irrelevant. We all reach a turning point in our lives. Some call out to God in the depths of despair. Others call out when nothing in the world seems to be working for them. Some call out as a result of a crisis, and for others, it is just a lifelong longing for a deeper, fuller understanding of who we are and why we are here. In other words, it is a deep search for meaning. That is what it has been for me. It was not that things weren't working in the world, or I wasn't achieving my goals, but I was lacking in the deep peace that comes from the surrender of my own way. I valued my independence, my street-smarts, my ability to survive all manner of setbacks, my achievements, and my certainty that I was right in how I saw things, but it was always at the cost of the deep peace that only surrender could bring. We must become as little children and be willing to be taught. It means coming with totally empty hands unto our God, asking to be shown the way. It means giving up the "I know" mind.

What keeps us in the world seeking for our happiness "out there" is our fear of God, which is the final obstacle to peace. All our defenses are established to keep us from the love we are. Our fear is based on the belief that we will be punished by God for leaving our home. The reality is that our minds hold only what we think with God. "Lack of forgiveness blocks this thought from his awareness," (W.RIV.IN.2.7) but we have the power of choice. While we can and do rebel, delay and uphold the belief our happiness is in the world, we all have the freedom, and eventually the desire, to change our minds. With our change of mind, all our thoughts change. This is a process. Because of our fear of God, we seemingly need to take time to undo the guilt in the mind until we recognize God is only love and there is nothing to fear. In the meantime, we will not be hurled into Heaven. The process is under our control. Jesus tells us, "Tolerance for pain may be high, but it is not without limit. Eventually everyone begins to recognize, however dimly, that there must be a better way. As this recognition becomes more firmly established, it becomes a turning point. This ultimately reawakens spiritual vision, simultaneously weakening the investment in physical sight." (T.2.III.3.5-8)(ACIM OE T.2.II.48)

He goes on to say, "The alternating investment in the two levels of perception is usually experienced as conflict, which can become very acute." (T.2.III.3.9)(ACIM OE T.2.II.48) You may be noticing this in your own life. As my friend Nouk Sanchez describes it, you can't have one foot in one boat and the other foot in the other boat without eventually falling on your face. When we make a commitment to truth, our conflict in trying to live in two worlds is diminished. "Until they achieve this, they waste themselves and their true creative powers on useless attempts to make themselves more comfortable by inappropriate means." (T.2.III.5.2)(ACIM OE T.2.II.50) The means to reach the real world are constantly being offered to us. All that is required is our decision. He needs our willingness and our dedication to the truth, and we can't fail because the truth is already in our minds. There is nothing to seek. We can't fail because we haven't lost anything. We just need to realize this fact. In other words, there is nothing we can do to change who we are. That is what the Atonement Principle is about. We can only be unaware of who we are. Now we are learning to release all that is not true that we have been deceived about.

I was driving to an appointment yesterday. I had started out late and was hoping that all the traffic lights would be green and I would have no obstacles to delay me further. On the contrary, not only was I hitting every red light, but then I made the wrong turn off the freeway and was going in the opposite direction of my appointment. The stress was increasing as I berated myself. Then I remembered my mind holds only what I think with God. Would God be concerned about time? Would God give value to the valueless? Would God have thoughts of unworthiness and self-judgment? Did getting there on time really matter? John Mark Stroud calls these "wonder" questions. They are helpful in releasing the mind from the grip of the ego. In my questioning, I realized how I was giving meaning to the meaningless, and with that came release of the grip that the ego had on my mind. Ah. . . my mind holds only what I think with God. The funny thing was that my appointment was for a massage in order to help me relax and de-stress! Ultimately, only the mind can lead us to deep relaxation.

To open to the truth, we need to bring our mistaken thoughts for correction. As we release the blocks to love in our minds, the awareness of our true Self, as the love we are, reveals itself to us. Everything is then flooded by divine love that comes through us. We are conduits for that love. There is no limit to it. Time and space are irrelevant to it. When the misperceptions in our minds are corrected, the power available to us is absolutely immense and beyond our ability to understand. There are no limitations on it. That is why orders of difficulty in miracles don't exist. There is nothing too big or too small for a miracle to address. All problems are equal in magnitude when it comes to the miracle. There is no problem bigger than any other problem because it is not about the outside condition. It is only about a change of mind. The miracle is internal. Yes, it can be reflected in the world, but it all starts with an inner shift.

The beauty of it is that salvation is very simple. It comes right down to a decision we make right now. We do not have to look far. Our brothers are all around us. We forgive what is within by forgiving what appears to be without, which is just our hidden hates and secret sins. As we do so, we clear the channel of this mind so it truly can be a beautiful conduit of God's Love. What a glorious thing it is!

Love and blessings, Sarah
IV. Release and Restoration

20 You are accustomed to the notion that the mind can see the source of pain where it is not. The doubtful service of displacement is to hide the real source of your guilt and keep from your awareness the full perception that it is insane. Displacement always is maintained by the illusion that the source, from which attention is diverted, must be true and must be fearful, or you would not have displaced the guilt onto what you believed to be less fearful. You are therefore willing with little opposition to look upon all sorts of "sources" underneath awareness, provided that they are not the deeper source to which they bear no real relationship at all.

21 Insane ideas have no real relationships, for that is why they are insane. No real relationship can rest on guilt or even hold one spot of it to mar its purity. For all relationships which guilt has touched are used but to avoid the person and the guilt. What strange relationships you have made for this strange purpose! And you forgot that real relationships are holy and cannot be used by you at all. They are used only by the Holy Spirit, and it is that which makes them pure. For by preempting for your own ends what you should have given to Him, He cannot use them unto your release. No one who would unite in any way with anyone for his own salvation will find it in that strange relationship. It is not shared, and so it is not real.

22 In any union with a brother in which you seek to lay your guilt upon him or share it with him or perceive his own, you will feel guilty. Nor will you find satisfaction and peace with him, because your union with him is not real. You will see guilt in that relationship because you put it there. It is inevitable that those who suffer guilt will attempt to displace it, because they do believe in it. Yet, though they suffer, they will not look within and let it go. They cannot know they love and cannot understand what loving is. Their main concern is to perceive the source of guilt outside themselves, beyond their own control.

23 When you maintain that you are guilty but the source lies in the past, you are not looking inward. The past is not in you. Your weird associations to it have no meaning in the present. Yet you let them stand between you and your brothers, with whom you find no real relationships at all. Can you expect to use your brothers as a means to "solve" the past and still to see them as they really are? Salvation is not found by those who use their brothers to resolve problems which are not there. You wanted not salvation in the past. Would you impose your idle wishes on the present and hope to find salvation now?

24 Determine, then, to be not as you were. Use no relationship to hold you to the past, but with each one each day be born again. A minute, even less, will be enough to free you from the past and give your mind in peace over to the Atonement. When everyone is welcome to you as you would have yourself be welcome to your Father, you will see no guilt in you. For you will have accepted the Atonement, which shone within you all the while you dreamed of guilt and would not look within and see it.

25 As long as you believe that guilt is justified in any way in anyone whatever he may do, you will not look within, where you would always find Atonement. The end of guilt will never come as long as you believe there is a reason for it. For you must learn that guilt is always totally insane and has no reason. The Holy Spirit seeks not to dispel reality. If guilt were real, Atonement would not be. The purpose of Atonement is to dispel illusions, not to establish them as real and then forgive them.

26 The Holy Spirit does not keep illusions in your mind to frighten you and show them to you fearfully to demonstrate what He has saved you from. What He has saved you from is gone. Give no reality to guilt, and see no reason for it. The Holy Spirit does what God would have Him do and has always done so. He has seen separation, but knows of union. He teaches healing, but He also knows of creation. He would have you see and teach as He does, and through Him. Yet what He knows, you do not know, though it is yours.

28 You who have been unmerciful unto yourselves do not remember your Father's Love. And looking without mercy upon your brothers, you do not remember how much you love Him. Yet it is forever true. In shining peace within you is the perfect purity in which you were created. Fear not to look upon the lovely truth in you. Look through the cloud of guilt that dims your vision, and look past darkness to the holy place where you will see the light. The altar to your Father is as pure as He Who raised it to Himself. Nothing can keep from you what Christ would have you see. His will is like His Father's, and He offers mercy to every Child of God, as He would have you do.

29 Release from guilt as you would be released. There is no other way to look within and see the light of love shining as steadily and as surely as God Himself has always loved His Son. And as His son loves Him. There is no fear in love, for love is guiltless. You who have always loved your Father can have no fear for any reason to look within and see your holiness. You cannot be as you believed you were. Your guilt is without reason, because it is not in the Mind of God where you are. And this is reason, which the Holy Spirit would restore to you. He would remove only illusions. All else He would have you see. And in Christ's vision, He would show you the perfect purity that is forever within God's Son.

30 You cannot enter into real relationships with any of God's Sons unless you love them all and equally. Love is not special. If you single out part of the Sonship for your love, you are imposing guilt on all your relationships and making them unreal. You can love only as God loves. Seek not to love unlike Him, for there is no love apart from His. Until you recognize that this is true, you will have no idea what love is like. No one who condemns a brother can see himself as guiltless in the peace of God. If he is guiltless and in peace and sees it not, he is delusional and has not looked upon himself. To him I say,

31 Behold the Son of God and look upon his purity and
be still. In quiet look upon his holiness and offer thanks
unto his Father that no guilt has ever touched him
.

32 No illusion that you have ever held against him has touched his innocence in any way. His shining purity, wholly untouched by guilt and wholly loving, is bright within you. Let us look upon him together and love him. For in our love of him is your guiltlessness. But look upon yourself, and gladness and appreciation for what you see will banish guilt forever. I thank You, Father, for the purity of Your most holy Son, whom You have created guiltless forever.

33 Like you my faith and my belief are centered on what I treasure. The difference is that I love only what God loves with me, and because of this, I treasure you beyond the value that you set on yourselves, even unto the worth that God has placed upon you. I love all that He created, and all my faith and my belief I offer unto it. My faith in you is strong as all the love I give my Father. My trust in you is without limit and without the fear that you will hear me not. I thank the Father for your loveliness and for the many gifts that you will let me offer to the Kingdom in honor of its wholeness, which is of God.

34 Praise be unto you who make the Father one with His own Son. Alone we are all lowly, but together we shine with brightness so intense that none of us alone can even think on it. Before the glorious radiance of the Kingdom, guilt melts away and, transformed into kindness, will never more be what it was. Every reaction that you experience will be so purified that it is fitting as a hymn of praise unto your Father. See only praise of Him in what He has created, for He will never cease His praise of you. United in this praise, we stand before the gates of Heaven where we will surely enter in our blamelessness. God loves you. Could I, then, lack faith in you and love Him perfectly?

35 Forgetfulness and sleep and even death become the ego's best advice for how to deal with the perceived and harsh intrusion of guilt on peace. Yet no one sees himself in conflict and ravaged by a cruel war unless he believes that both opponents in the war are real. Believing this, he must escape, for such a war would surely end his peace of mind and so destroy him. Yet if he could but realize the war is between forces that are real and unreal powers, he could look upon himself and see his freedom. No one finds himself ravaged and torn in endless battles which he himself perceives as wholly without meaning.

36 God would not have His Son embattled, and so His Son's imagined "enemy," which he made, is totally unreal. You are but trying to escape a bitter war from which you have escaped. The war is gone. For you have heard the hymn of freedom rising unto Heaven. Gladness and joy belong to God for your release, because you made it not. Yet as you made not freedom, so you made not a war that could endanger freedom. Nothing destructive ever was or will be. The war, the guilt, the past are gone as one into the unreality from which they came.

ALSO, by means of your will or other estate plan, you can name "Course in Miracles Society" as the beneficiary of a portion of your estate, or of particular assets in your estate.

In this way, you are honoring your loved ones while also providing critical support to the extension of LOVE.

Namaste and Thank You!
