April 2016 Yard of the Month Winner
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GMVA is pleased to announce winners for its April and May Yard of the Month (YOM). April's winners are Shashank and Medha Karve, who live on Angel Leaf Road in Grogan's Point.
Shashank is Executive Vice President of Cobalt International Energy. Medha is a volunteer Dossant with the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. They have lived in The Woodlands for 32 years, almost ten of which have been at their current residence. They have two married children. Son, Jai, and his wife live in Boston and daughter, Jusleen, and husband live nearby. They are currently proud grandparents of two.
Favorite flowers in their yard include begonias, gingers, knock out roses, and a crepe myrtle, all of which are low maintenance. They use drip irrigation to keep plants fresh and minimize water usage.
May 2016 Yard of the Month Winner
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
May Yard of the Month winners are Joe & Dianne McCarthy, who are the original owners of their home on Cassowary.  They have lived in their home for 38 years and it is filled with beautiful flowers. One side of their front yard is lined with tons of red penta and variegated grass bushes.  Fox spire ferns dot the yard.  Layers of red rock set off the red pentas.  A cute metal lantern adds to the garden.

In the front, yellow and red day lilies, red pentas, pink vincas and white with red-veined caladiums fill the yard with color.  White and green sharp grass bushes in several areas, bring out the grey-green of the dusty miller and the large pittosporum bush that frames the other side of the house.

Wilkerson Garden Tower Project a Great Success

In the past year the GMVA has spent over $1,000 to support students and teachers at Wilkerson in establishing a garden.  Key to the project is a garden tower which is six feet tall and filled with compost. There are 'pockets' on the side of the tower in which plants can be grown.  The garden team, a group of 16 students and science teacher Ms. Wendy Park, are maintaining the garden.

The GMVA has bought the tools, seeds, the tower, and T-shirts for the garden club they established.  This, like the scholarships we offer, are a result of the earnings from The Woodlands Farmers' Market.  Come out and support your local weekly event.
