The annual Police Officer Memorial ceremony was held at the Empire State Plaza in Albany this week. The names of 27 police officers killed in the line of duty were added to the black granite memorial wall. Again this year, a large number of those officers who were memorialized were NYC police officers who died recently from illness incurred as a result of responding to the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.

Among the honored were two Deputy Sheriffs and an Undersheriff. All three were "historical" submissions.

  • Erie County Deputy Frederick W. Kaesser was killed in 1925 when when he entered a suspected gang headquarters in Lancaster, N.Y.
  • Oneida County Deputy Charles J. Kammerlohr died in July 1921 when killed by bootleggers in a shootout.
  • Undersheriff Ralph E. Legg, of Yates County was killed as a passenger in a patrol car crash in August, 1958.

At the Memorial Ceremony at the historic St. Mary's Church, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple gave the first reading and Ontario County Sheriff's Lt. Robert Green (retired) was the organist. This was Lt. Green's 25th year traveling to Albany and playing the organ at the Memorial Ceremony.

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike, Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, Niagara County Deputy Richard Bull, Niagara County Corrections Officers Steve Fiacco, Joseph Moll, and Ian Langdon; and Erie County Sheriff's Deputies Richard Lundberg and David Makowski were among those that traveled to Albany to attend the Memorial Ceremony and other events of the day.
