The UB Luxury Hardshell Bow Case

Here at Upton Bass, we certainly put a lot of emphasis on the importance of purchasing a good double bass. And who could blame us? It's in our name, it's in our nature. But for the orchestral bassist who plays arco, the bass is only one part of a great sound. Some have made the analogy that "the bow is for the string player what breath is for the singer," so why are bows often thought of as secondary to your instrument? This week, we are paying homage to the "unsung hero," our friend--the bass bow.

Give Gary or myself a call and let's talk about finding a bass bow that complements you and your bass. We love what we do, and we'd love to do it for you!

How NOT to Hold the Bow
Video by Michael Klinghoffer

Here at Upton Bass, we're big fans of Gary Karr. We worked with him extensively on our Karr model bass, and we always love working with his students, including Craig Butterfield and David Murray.

When one of Karr's students speaks, we always listen. We've been following Michael Klinghoffer's instructional videos for some time now, and we are proud to offer his new book " Mr. Karr, Would You Teach Me How to Drive a Double Bass?." The book is an excellent resource in itself, and Klinghoffer supplements the lessons with periodic videos on his YouTube feed. Check out this video on How NOT to Hold the Bow.

Now available at Upton Bass! This book is meant for anyone interested in the art of double bass playing. It is based on the technique and teachings of world renowned double bass virtuoso, Maestro Gary Karr.

Many books have been written about Gary Karr's methods and outlining his famous exercises, but this book by Michael Klinghoffer is a delightful and creative take on Gary Karr's legacy. Using eye-catching drawings, comparisons, and metaphors, Klinghoffer has defined Karr's methods in a way that is accessible to students, performers, and teachers alike. This book is a fabulous documentation of Gary Karr's legacy through the eyes and hands of one special teacher.
