Alamo Colleges' Board Names New Officers, Former Chair Awarded Associate Degree
Outgoing Alamo Colleges' Board of Trustees Chair Anna U. Bustamante was presented an associate degree from Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College at its commencement ceremony.

At their regular meeting May 17, the Alamo Colleges' Board of Trustees elected new officers to two-year terms. District 7 Trustee Dr. Yvonne Katz was named board chair. Marcelo Casillas, District 4 Trustee, was named vice chair. Dr. Gene Sprague, District 6 Trustee, was elected secretary, and Denver McClendon, District 2 Trustee, was elected assistant secretary. Casillas and McClendon, along with District 1 Trustee Joe Alderete, Jr. and District 3 Trustee Anna U. Bustamante, were recently reelected to serve on the board through May 2022.

Bustamante, who previously served as the first Hispanic female board chair, was awarded an associate degree from Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College (SAC) at its commencement ceremony on May 14.  Presented by SAC President Dr. Robert Vela, the degree was awarded by way of 'reverse transfer' and officially recognizes her academic achievements at San Antonio College. 

Before earning her bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Bustamante took classes at SAC and earned the requisite number of credits for an associate degree.


Alamo Colleges - St. Philip's College Histologic Technician Students Win Awards at State Conference
Five students from the SPC histologic technician program recently won awards at the Texas Society of Histotechnology Conference in Houston.

Five students from the Alamo Colleges - St.Philip's College (SPC) histologic technician program recently won awards for their outstanding demonstration practicums at the Texas Society of Histotechnology Conference in Houston. The students won all categories in the slide practicum contest and received cash awards. They are:
First Place ($100) - Abraham Ibarra
Second Place ($75) Marissa Guerrero
Third Place ($50) - Hayley Morrison
Honorary Award ($25) - Alayna Gibbs
Honorary Award ($25) - Samantha Garza

Ibarra also was presented with the National Student Honor Award by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. He was the only student nationally to be given this award. Garza also received the DAKO continuing education grant for $500.

SPC's two-year histologic technician program trains students for critical healthcare careers analyzing blood, tissue and urine samples to detect malignancies or other diseases. Melmar Ordinario is the program director at SPC.

Alamo Colleges' Study Abroad programs this summer will include programs in China, Japan, London, Spain, Italy and South Korea.

Alamo Colleges' Faculty, Students Study Abroad
This Summer

This summer, 13 faculty members and 54 students from the Alamo Colleges will have the opportunity to gain a global perspective by participating in one of six Study Abroad programs. They will study not only the language of their host country, but also the culture, enriching their educational experience in a unique fashion. This is the largest group of Study Abroad students who have ever participated in the program at the Alamo Colleges.
 
Scholarships help to offset the program fees for the students, with 15 of the students receiving Benjamin Gilman scholarships from $2,000 to $4,500 and 25 students receiving Alamo Colleges Foundation scholarships from $500 to $1,250. This summer's programs will take place in China,  Japan,  London,  Spain,  Italy and  South Korea.
