YOM HASHOAH

On Yom Hashoah the entire Middle School was privileged to meet and hear a presentation by Mr. Alex Konstantyn, a survivor, a former HANC parent, former principal of East Meadow Jewish Center Hebrew School, and an incredibly inspiring speaker. After Rabbi Hecht introduced the program, six candles were lit in memory of the Six Million. Then we listened to the story.

Mr. Konstantyn was a young boy in Poland when his parents realized they needed to avoid/escape the Nazis. His father had converted all the money he had into gold and the family kept traveling the countryside, asking for or buying food and trying to remain inconspicuous.  He told us of several incidents where they narrowly escaped or were identified as Jews by people they thought were sincere about trying to help them. Mr. Konstantyn's father was actually poisoned by a piece of pie given to him by a man they thought was protecting them. Luckily, he and his mother had not yet eaten their pieces, but he watched his father die in his mother's arms. Mr. Konstantyn credits his mother with giving him life more than once since she forced herself to leave her dead husband, grab her son and the gold, and keep moving and hiding.

The messages we were asked to take away were to keep the stories alive and educate future generations about the Holocaust. We are so thankful we were able to meet Mr. Konstantyn and his wife and see pictures of their beautiful children and grandchildren, proving to us that the Jews did not succumb to the Nazis' grand plan.

YOM HAZIKARON

Last Wednesday we had a Yom HaZikaron program. The program was run by Morah Aronowitz. It was extremely moving. First, everyone stood for a two minute siren to remember the fallen soldiers.  Then a few students read meaningful poems, both in Hebrew and in English, about the importance of the day. Finally, we watched a short movie about Lt. Hadar Goldin, who was kidnapped and killed during an encounter with terrorists at a tunnel in Gaza. From watching this movie, we learned about what courage and modesty really are.  We are so proud and thankful that the IDF soldiers are ready to give their lives to protect Eretz Yisrael.

YOM HAATZMAUT

On Yom Haatzmaut the middle school celebrated in style after first taking time to recognize a true hero.

The day began with a beautiful davening including hallel. After first period, the students were called into the Beit Medrash to hear from Mr. Leo Zanger. Mr. Zanger was a member of the Air Force who helped defend Eretz Yisrael right after the war of independence. He began serving in June 1948. The students sat mesmerized as Mr. Zanger told his story through words and pictures . At the conclusion of his talk students were able to ask some questions.

Mr. Zanger's own granddaughter, Emily, is currently a twelfth grader at HANC.

We thank Mr. Zanger for his presentation and of course for his defense of Eretz Yisroel.

After we heard from Mr. Zanger we filed into the gym for a concert by Eitan Katz. The students loved it. There was a combination of slow and fast songs and the dancing and tisch were incredible. There was an even a guest singer when Eitan was joined on stage by our very own Rabbi Hecht!

It was an enjoyable and memorable day!

NAMES NOT NUMBERS

On Tuesday, May 17th 2016, Hanc Middle School had the privilege and honor to host the presentation of our 8th grade girls' Names Not Numbers documentary. Students, faculty, administration, families and survivors all united for this momentous occasion for which our 8th grade girls worked so hard. For months, girls researched the Holocaust and asked evocative questions in preparation for meeting their survivor. After both having the  zechut (merit)  to meet and interview their survivors, the 8th grade girls spent hours editing their respective interviews into the amazing film which was presented Tuesday night. We want to give a very special thanks to Tovah Rosenberg, Rabbi Hecht, Morah Eisenberg our beloved 8th grade girls and to our resilient and inspiring survivors: Karl Schapiro, Celia Ruppert, Etta Flam, Jack Nayberg, Esther Smith, and Lee Lichtman. May Am Yisrael know of no more sorrow and never forget.

Eighth Grade goes to Washington

This past
Wednesday and Thursday, the eighth graders went to Washington, D.C.

After davening and breakfast, the students excitedly boarded the busses.  The first stop was the Capitol.  Students saw a very inspiring movie, "Out of Many One."  The movie spoke about uniting the nation and how the Capitol houses the Senate and the House of Representatives.  After the movie, students got a tour of the Rotunda.  It was unbelievable to look all the way up and think about how that dome was painted.  Next stop was Arlington National Cemetery and the Changing of the Guard.  What a moving ceremony.  It takes a great amount of discipline to walk up and back like that and to do so perfectly all day.  After two calm places, we began our evening with a fun-filled boat cruise around the Potomac.  The students had a great time and took some amazing pictures.  The cruise was followed by a trip to "Souvenir City", a picture by the White House and a visit to the WWII Memorial.  It is absolutely stunning at night when it is all lit up.

Day two was another action packed day which included: The Lincoln Memorial (he looks and is really tall on that chair), the FDR Memorial (stunning waterfalls), the Holocaust Museum (incredibly poignant) and the Newseum (commercials galore).  Day two also included a trip on the Carousel on the Mall.  The kids had a real blast on that one.

The students had an awesome time on the trip.

Special thank you to our chaperones: Morah Braver, Rabbi Hanson, Dr. Levey, Dr. Oppenheim, and Mrs. Wasser.
