May 19, 2016 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the First Sunday after Pentecost: Trinity Sunday.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and Deacon Bill will preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Season after Pentecost

The season after Pentecost, according to the calendar of the church year (BCP, p. 32), begins on the Monday following Pentecost, and continues through most of the summer and autumn. It may include as many as twenty-eight Sundays, depending on the date of Easter.

The Season after Pentecost begins with an observance of Trinity Sunday when we remember and honor the Triune God revealed to us in and through the life of the Resurrected Christ. On Trinity Sunday, white is the color of the day.

From Trinity Sunday on, the color will be green as we move into ordinary time and hear the lessons of Jesus' teachings and learn how to live the Christian life. The color for the season after Pentecost is green to symbolize the growth and life of the church. It is the longest season of the church year, from Trinity Sunday until the first Sunday of Advent.

DAVID E. WEAVER IV MEMORIAL FUND

As June quickly approaches, our thoughts turn
to the David E. Weaver IV Memorial Fund.  For those of you newer to our congregation, David E. Weaver IV was the son of our former Rector David E. Weaver III, and his wife Sally. As his Dad was with us for 20 years, David grew up in our community. He was an amazing young man.  He passed away in 2003 and this Memorial Fund was established in his memory.

The committee met recently to choose this year's recipients. All are organizations benefiting the youth of the greater La Grange area. David was committed to social justice and improving the lives of young people.

We will celebrate and honor his life this Sunday, Trinity Sunday. The free will offering will be for this purpose.  Checks with notation on the memo line are welcome as well. Thank you to all who contribute to this very special effort.

Saint of the Week: Saint  Dustan

Feast Day: May 19

Dunstan (909 - 19 May, 988)  was an Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, a Bishop of Worcester, a Bishop of London, and an Archbishop of Canterbury, later canonized as a saint.

He was born into a noble family, and after being educated by monks, became a monk himself in about 934 and was ordained as a priest about five years later.

In a chaotic age, when Anglo-Saxons and Danes fought each other for control of Great Britain, his work restored monastic life in England and reformed the English Church. His 11th-century biographer, Osbern, himself an artist and scribe, states that Dunstan was skilled in "making a picture and forming letters," as were other clergy of his time who reached senior rank.

Dunstan served as an important minister of state to several English kings. He was the most popular saint in England for nearly two centuries, having gained fame for the many stories of his greatness, not least among which were those concerning his famed cunning in defeating the devil.

WISH LIST

A 32-42 Inch flat screen Television

Having a television is essential for the way I teach.  I use technology, and PowerPoint, video clips and YouTube to teach.  I have found this use of technology to be effective for really all ages.

If you are thinking of replacing your 32-42 inch (or larger) flat screen, consider donating it to Emmanuel.
Thanks, Ellen+

We are in the process of hiring a new church sexton.  Until that happens be aware that you may not have everything set up as you normally would.  We are going to need everyone's help to pitch in and throw away trash if you see it and report any major concerns to the church office.

If you have time and would like to help please let Judy know.  This will be a learning curve for all of us. So I'm praying for patience, cooperation, and a great new sexton to come our way.

Emmanuel's Garage Sale

Start holding items for this year's Emmanuel Garage Sale Garage Sale!  We will be having our garage sale on August 19 & 20.

Parishioners are asked to start saving items and bringing them to the church starting in July, due to space being used for classes before that time. If you need to bring anything before July, you can put it in the nursery.

If you need someone to pick up any items, please contact the church office or Penny Longo at (708) 275-5028.  We need everyone's help to make this year's garage sale a big success!
