Dream in Green Expands Water and Energy Learning and Behavior (WE-LAB) Program into Broward County with ECO Broward Grant
May 20, 2016 - MIAMI, FL - The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Broward has announced that Dream in Green, Inc. (DIG) is the recipient of the ECO Broward grant to expand its Water and Energy Learning and Behavior (WE-LAB) program into Broward County in July 2016.
The Foundation received 13 applications on this issue from across South Florida in the highly competitive process. DIG's WE-LAB Broward project proposal was one of three proposals selected for support. The grant will allow the development and implementation of workshops that focus on urgent and highly relevant environmental education of more than 250 households in water and energy conservation. The project will be conducted with support from the City of Fort Lauderdale, City of Hollywood, City of Miramar and City of Hallandale Beach.
DIG has been conducting interactive WE-LAB workshops in Miami-Dade County since August 2013. A total of 57 workshops have been implemented, educating 1,721 households and resulting in an estimated savings of 3,786,200 gallons of water, 839,848 kWh of electricity, and 1,282,145 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted. DIG is looking forward to helping Broward County residents reduce their water and energy consumption, while lowering their carbon footprint with WE-LAB's educational workshops at community centers, business and organization venues, government agencies, schools, and hospitals in partnering cities. Participating cities agree to help host and promote the workshops to its residents.
The goal of the Community Foundation of Broward's ECO Broward, one of ten Issues that Matter, is to increase community environmental stewardship through educational programs. By providing workshops in cities in Broward that are vulnerable to the impacts of sea level rise and climate change, DIG's goal is to motivate community-wide water and energy-saving behaviors and foster long-term environmental stewardship.

Water and energy are woven into our daily lives and are strongly linked to one another through the production, distribution, consumption and treatment of both water and energy. The interactive WE-LAB workshops explain how decreasing the demand for energy and water at home can positively affect air quality and improve the water supply while helping to reduce a household's carbon footprint. To motivate participants to start their water and energy savings journey, workshops will provide a free toolkit valued at $75 that includes CFL lightbulbs, a low flow showerhead and faucet, a shower timer, and more!
