he Traffic Circles in Jefferson Park
were designed by U of A landscape architect students and manufactured and installed by J.Harris in 2012 with grant monies. The plantings have been monitored and hand watered by neighbors.
Those traffic calming devices have taken their beatings and volunteers have

reinstalled broken pieces and reset concrete after "hit and runs"
On Feb, early in the morning, the circle at Edison and Fremont was hit, downing two panels. In that case police were on the scene and a report was taken. JPNA has requested the city look into the repairs.

separates cars and bikes. Here is the possibility for "Right Hook Crashes" when drivers turn right and a biker is proceeding straight through the intersections or is in the driver's "blind spot"
Drivers and bikers must be extremely cautious!

According to the Federal Highway Commission
Bike lanes should be placed to the left of a right-turn lane to minimize the opportunity for right hook crashes and permit cyclists to ride through the intersection, From the

Study these two options for treatment of bikes and cars at intersections. And see the third option described below by Living Streets Alliance.
Mountain is the second most traveled bikeway in Tucson and bike/car contact is an ever present danger..

Kylie Walzak, Program manager, Living Streets Alliance was asked -
What is the best practice for intersection at Mountain and Grant? Her answer:
"This is such a tricky intersection. As far as "best practices", I know many across the U.S. are excited about "Dutch Intersections". Davis, CA installed the first one in the U.S. followed quickly by Salt Lake City. Check it out:

I don't think a dedicated right turn lane (for cars) on Mountain Ave. is a good idea because it forces a point of negotiating contact between cars and bicyclists. We see this all over town. The cyclist wants to continue straight but the right-turning traffic wants to get in to the turn lane and the two have to negotiate the space. It doesn't always work out well. I know the City is planning to install flexible delineators, like we see on St. Mary's Rd. and the Bike HAWK on 9th Ave at Speedway among others, at Mountain and Grant soon - like in the next month - and I think that's the way to go, separate the cars from bicycles. I think the delineators will help keep cars out of the bike lane on both sides of the intersection and potentially help reduce conflict points."

QUESTIONS CONTINUE ABOUT THE BIKE SAFETY AT MOUNTAIN AND GRANT
Neighbors continue to question the bike facility plans planned for Mountain and Grant. The work on that intersection will not begin until about 2020 in Phase 5. As questions are asked and answered by the project engineer, city staff , or bike groups, they will be posted to the coalition website.

UpTick in burglaries - Be aware!

oilgCortez neighborhood has experienced a rash of burglaries. Report any suspicious activity or strangers to 911. The police are on the alert.
Testimony from our neighbor in the 900 block on Hampton:
"Just to let you know that my home was invaded on 2/2 between 10 and 11 am. I had evidently not locked the backdoor but the invader had to come over a 5' block wall with locked corrugated steel gates. He (or she) smashed my darkroom door to absolute splinters but must have been scared off by housemate returning home.
Police came promptly and checked everything out. Please remember to check your doors and windows before you leave, even for a brief errand. I need to seriously consider an alarm.
ps - police say if you see any sign of break-in/invasion when you come home, DO NOT ENTER. Call 911 and wait for police to check it out. You do not want to encounter an invader."

You and your neighbors are invited to participate in the Feldman's Neighborhood HHW Collection
from 8 AM to 11:30 AM on Saturday, March 5. Please drop off your hazardous materials no later than 11:15 AM.
LOCATION: West parking lot at St. Luke's Home, 615 E. Adams Street.
FOR SAFETY, WE CANNOT ACCEPT LEAKING WASTE. Leaking containers, complete with identifying labels, must be placed inside a second, sealed container.

The new Tucson Birding Trail Map is available. The free map shows the 45 best locations in and around Tucson for finding wild birds. The sites include a range of mountain, desert, and wetland locations, each with its own variety of species. The map will be available at a variety of Tucson Audubon and Tucson Parks and Recreation department locations. The Tucson Birding Trail Map was produced by Parks and Recreation and the Tucson Audubon Society, with funding from the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Heritage Fund. As many as 350 wild bird species have been seen in and around Tucson over the years.

10th Annual International Day
OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY!

International Day has been likened to a mini Tucson Meet Yourself . Guests have the opportunity to learn about another country's culture while sampling its unique fare.
Admission to International Day is free. There is no charge to come and enjoy the incredible line-up of 8 separate entertainment acts - including our very own IST student body.
Upon arrival, guests may purchase ticket vouchers for the purchase of food, pony rides, jumping castle fun, glitter tattoos and - new this year! - a rock climbing wall. We will also have passports and lanyards for sale (if you bring your lanyards from years past, we won't charge for the passport). Once the passport is in hand, kids can go around to all the country booths and get their passports stamped at no charge.
