The Sistrunk Parade and Festival returns to historic Sistrunk Boulevard on Saturday, February 27. The free event kicks off with the inaugural All-Star Classic 5K run at 7:00 am. The parade departs from Lincoln Park at 9:00 am and travels east down historic Sistrunk Boulevard to NW 9 Avenue featuring marching bands, twirlers, step teams, classic cars, and decorative floats. 39th annual waterway cleanup set for March 5th
The Broward County Waterway Cleanup, now in its 39th year, is one of Broward County's largest and longest running environmental events. It will take place on Saturday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at various locations throughout Fort Lauderdale including: the 15th Street Boat Ramp, Cooley's Landing, George English Park, Bill Keith Preserve and Lauderdale Isles.
In 2015, nearly 2,000 volunteers of all ages by land and by boat worked at more than 30 locations across the county to remove 15 tons of trash and debris from our waterways, rivers and canals. You do not need a boat to participate, but registration is required. The Waterway Cleanup also offers essay, short story and art scholarship contests for middle and high school students. Resident Tree Giveaway set for March 26, 2016
Summer days will be cooler, greener and more beautiful when the City of Fort Lauderdale reaches our goal of a 23.6% tree canopy cover by 2018.
Residents are invited to help reach that goal by participating in our free tree giveaway from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26th at Riverland Park. The park is located at 950 SW 27th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312.
With proof of residency, all Fort Lauderdale residents may receive up to two trees per household at no charge on a first come, first served basis.
The tree giveaway is being held in conjunction with the Annual Riverland Eggstravaganza Block Party, a popular event that includes an egg hunt, entertainment and more.
Studies show that urban forests have many benefits such as contributing to cleaner air, reducing stormwater runoff, increasing energy savings and carbon sequestration, and creating higher property values. Due to these findings, the City has emphasized cultivating its urban forest to gain these quantifiable benefits for community health and quality of life.

Super-sized Drop-off Event to include hazardous waste, document shredding, clothing collection and medication take back
Event set for Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Mills Pond Park
The City of Fort Lauderdale is offering neighbors a convenient and responsible opportunity for household spring cleaning. A variety of unwanted items will be collected at a combined drop-off event at Mills Pond Park from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.
The event includes special sites for household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off, unwanted medication take back, on-site document shredding and a collection site operated by The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army will be collecting items in good condition, including:
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Linens
- Small household items
- Small kitchen items, and
- Dishes
No furniture, mattresses or other large items will be allowed.
Proof of residency in the participating cities of Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach or Tamarac is required (driver's license or utility bill) for hazardous waste and electronics drop-off.
There is no residency requirement for shredding, medication take back or donations to The Salvation Army.
The drop-off events are critical to protecting the environment by reducing the volume of waste in landfills and preventing the contamination of ground water.
Mills Pond Park is located at 2201 NW 9th Avenue (Powerline Road), in Fort Lauderdale.

'A painting a day, keeps the worries away'
Lamoy Patterson and Amanda Hill are the featured artists of the month at Fort Lauderdale City Hall.
Their company, "Painting in an Apple," seeks to relate the "usefulness of painting as a means of mindful relaxation and ultimately create a great impact on each individual we reach in each community we touch, until a global mark is made." Their slogan is "A painting a day, keeps the worries away."

As a
volunteer CERT member, you will learn life-saving skills for major emergencies including hurricanes, floods, and/or fires. You will also learn fire suppression and injury care for everyday situations. As a CERT graduate, your skills will be valuable to you, your family, and your community in the event of a major disaster. CERT members may be assigned to a team in their neighborhood where they will play an important community safety role, as well as assist Fire-Rescue professionals in the event of an emergency.

City Kicks-off Progresso Village Neighborhood Improvement Project
The City held a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday, February 13, to kick off the Progresso Village Neighborhood Improvement Project. Fulfilling the citywide vision to create a connected community, the project includes new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping throughout the neighborhood, between Sistrunk and Sunrise Boulevards, from Andrews Avenue west to NW 4th Avenue.
Event attendees included: Mayor John P. "Jack" Seiler, Commissioner Dean J. Trantalis, City Manager Lee Feldman, neighborhood president Ron Centamore, and several other neighbors from the community. The project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2016.

'Day of Service' great success
On January 18th the Sistrunk area was covered in a sea of black shirts in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, "A Day On, Not A Day Off." City volunteers joined hands with the YMCA, Rebuilding Together Broward, Broward College, FPL, Nova Southeastern University, and Home Depot in the second annual Fort Lauderdale United Day. More than 400 volunteers prepared care packages for veterans, created vision boards for youths, decorated trash cans, painted two homes, cleaned several miles of streets, and cleared a vacant lot of trash collecting more than 800 pounds of debris.
The second Show Up, Step Up, Stand Out Youth Leadership program started on January 16th with 28 participating students and 22 mentors. The program is an interactive four-month program that introduces Fort Lauderdale youth to the fundamental values and behaviors of leadership through monthly workshops, weekly mentoring calls, and program projects. Participating teens are paired with mentors, who will assist each student to develop, create, implement, and complete a community service project in the City of Fort Lauderdale around an issue that is important to the teen.
On January 9th and 16th hundreds of volunteers braved the cold and showed up at sunrise to clean our beaches. A team led by Kids Ecology Corps did an educational presentation and created beautiful artwork out of discarded trash. When you pick up debris, you protect and preserve Fort Lauderdale marine life and coral reefs too!
Please join our families, civic groups, students, organizations, and beach lovers at the monthly Fort Lauderdale Beach Sweep on the second Saturday of every month from 7-11am at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, 1100 Seabreeze Boulevard. Students will receive community service credit.

City Wins Complete Streets Awards
The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization recognized the City of Fort Lauderdale with two awards at the recent Safe Streets Summit. The City received the "Complete Streets Agency Champion" award for working with the private sector to include Complete Streets concepts into their development plans. The City also received the "Our Streets are Made for Walkin'" award for its significant investment in promoting and implementing Complete Streets, especially in the area of pedestrian safety improvements and ADA accessibility.
City community builders are working diligently to encourage
Complete Streets concepts in private development projects and have recommended many Complete Streets enhancements during the development review process, including wider sidewalks, bike parking, and accommodations for transit riders. Here are a few examples of the City's Complete Streets successes:
- Encouraged private developers of 12 major Fort Lauderdale projects to install a total of 7,833 feet of sidewalks with an average width of seven feet, 21 bike racks, and 74 additional on-street parking spaces.
- Successfully worked with the private sector to include Complete Streets concepts into The Manor and The Edge developments on US 1/Federal Highway, where buffered and shaded sidewalks were added to enhance the pedestrian experience, travel lanes were narrowed, and indoor bicycle parking was provided for all residents.
- Installed crosswalks, ADA improvements, and painted intersections in downtown Fort Lauderdale as part of the Downtown Walkability program to enhance safety and the pedestrian experience.
- Programmed more than $60 million in funding between 2016 and 2020 to build Complete Streets citywide.
To further elevate and enhance Complete Streets best practices, the City also recently adopted
Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale, which is a community action plan that promotes safety on our streets through a mix of education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement, and evaluation. Vision Zero is a highly effective approach to road safety that will guide the City toward its goal of achieving zero fatalities and severe injuries on Fort Lauderdale's streets.

Haitian Mayors visit Fort Lauderdale
Mayor Seiler welcomed Cap Haitien Mayor Alteon and Limonade Mayor Gerard to Fort Lauderdale earlier this month as a continuation of the fruitful 14-year Sister City relationship. Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International (GFLSCI) has worked with the City and local businesses through the years to donate school desks and supplies, tools, a garbage truck, protective fire gear and a fire truck to Cap Haitien in northern Haiti. The delegation was in Fort Lauderdale as part of a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) program to help Cap Haitien identify and implement two public service projects. The USAID program, known as LOKAL+, was developed in coordination with the International City/County Management Association to enable local Haitian governments to provide quality public services. Mayors Alteon and Gerard and their staff toured numerous City facilities and area amenities including City Hall and Port Everglades. Marianne Winfield, Executed Director, GFLSCI encouraged the Haitian delegation to return to their cities with enthusiasm and engage other to benefit from all they learned during their visit.

Groundbreaking in Palm Aire
Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. "Jack" Seiler, City Manager Lee Feldman, and Homeowners Association President Gary Carter joined with City staff and neighbors from Palm Aire Village West for a groundbreaking ceremony to officially kick off the Palm Aire Village West Improvement Project. Highlights of the project include installation of a new, decorative, PVC fence, along with a three-foot red tip cocoplum hedge around the perimeter of the neighborhood. The project will improve the beauty, aesthetics, and environmental quality of Palm Aire Village West, while enhancing the health, welfare, and safety of our community.

Vision Zero Network selects Fort Lauderdale as Focus Cities participant
The City of Fort Lauderdale was recently selected by the
Vision Zero Network as one of 10 cities nationwide to join the new
Vision Zero Focus Cities program due to its commitment to Vision Zero, which is a road safety initiative that acknowledges that traffic deaths and severe injuries on the nation's streets are preventable. Fort Lauderdale will join the cities of Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. to advance Vision Zero by developing and sharing innovative strategies and best practices that will save lives by making streets safer. The City and its community builders are committed to taking on the ambitious goal of achieving zero loss of life on City streets and offers the following tips to help reach that goal.

- When walking, be visible, use sidewalks and crosswalks, wait for crossing signals, and make eye contact with drivers.
- When driving, slow down, be on the lookout for pedestrians and bicyclists, stop on red, look before turning, yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, drive the speed limit, don't text and drive, and stay focused.
- When bicycling, bike in the direction of travel and use hand signals.
- When walking, biking or driving, always be alert and predictable, follow the rules of the road, and never do so under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
