Cool and Green SuperNAP

It's not easy being green. For SuperNAP operator Switch, however, it's a milestone for welcoming the New Year as the company announced that all its data center facilities are being completely run with renewable energy as of Jan. 1, 2016. "All Switch data centers are and will be 100 percent powered by renewable energy," said Adam Kramer, Switch vice president of strategy, in a phone interview. "This not only covers what we have today but also what we're building at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center."
Unlike typical in-house data center operations such as Apple's Reno Technology Park facility, which caters specifically to the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant, Switch specializes in building colocation data centers that provide space to other companies and houses more staff. It's list of more than 1,000 clients include DreamWorks, eBay, Activision, eHarmony and Boeing.
HOW COOL? IT'S TONS COOL, LITERALLY.
With 150 megawatts of capacity, SUPERNAP Tahoe Reno 1 requires a lot of cooling, 82,000 tons of it as a matter of fact. No other data center building in the world has 82,000 tons of cooling, according to Switch.
VERY BIG
The SUPERNAP Tahoe Reno Industrial Campus will measure nearly 6.5 million square feet once all its buildings are completed.
That's bigger than the 6.3-million-square-foot Range International Information Group data center in China, which interestingly was to be the largest data center campus once completed in 2016.
The campus is also located in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, which also happens to be the largest industrial park in the world.
