Garces Dime A Day Project
CRS Rice Bowl

Garces senior Mikey Vibal with a Dime a Day collection box.
Every year during Lent, Garces students give daily alms to those less fortunate.  The school wide project is called "Dime a Day".  This year, "Dime a Day" is being coordinated through the Garces Social Justice Club.  The charity they have chosen to support is the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl project which is a faith-in-action program for families and faith communities. During Lent, Garces students have been asked to donate their "dimes" or left over change to the boxes in their home rooms.  The hope is to raise $5,000 to support a wonderful organization whose mission is to fight the conditions of poverty around the world.  One of the reasons the students chose this charity is that there is an app the students can download to their iPads.  The app provides daily devotions the students can reflect upon during Lent.  The app also provides recipes for meatless meals to make on Fridays during Lent along with inspirational stories of people around the world who have been positively impacted by the program. One of the other reasons the students selected CRS Rice Bowl is that 25% of the funds raised will stay local and go to support Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Fresno. Those funds will be used to alleviate hunger and poverty in our community.  One of the student leaders of the Social Justice Club, Garces senior Mikey Vibal, said that "Pope Francis declared this year as the Year of Mercy and one of his major themes is to preserve the dignity of all.  Not only are we helping those internationally, but we are also educating ourselves on the dignity of the marginalized."

Message from
Kim Harper
Director of Admissions

This month the Admissions Office has been busy welcoming the Class of 2020 to Garces. Right now students from all over Bakersfield are submitting their applications to attend next fall. We are eager to welcome all our future Rams to the Garces family. If you know of an 8th grader who is interested in attending Garces please contact the Garces Admissions Office as soon as possible. Last Friday we hosted a VIP Future Ram Tailgate for all incoming freshmen during the varsity basketball games. During the boy's game Jack Hatten won the halftime shooting contest and received a $30 gift card to That T-Shirt Company - Garces Student Store. And our 2016 Selfie Contest Winner is Gracie Geissel. Gracie's selfie won her $500 towards her tuition. Congratulations Gracie!!! Upcoming dates for the Class of 2020 include the Placement Test on Saturday, March 12th and the annual Freshmen Orientation on Wednesday, March 16th at 5:00pm. Once again, if you know of any current 8th graders who are interested in attending Garces or even a current high school student who may be interested in transferring please contact the Garces Admissions Office. We can help all future rams with applications, schedule a shadow day or campus tour, and answer all questions for potential Garces families.

Attention Junior Parents -
College Letters of Recommendation

This fall when students complete their college applications, many schools will ask them to submit at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher. Unless a college requests something different, teacher letters of recommendation should come from solid subjects (math, English, science, social science, or foreign language) that they're taking right now. The junior year will be the most recent full academic year when they apply-the freshmen and sophomore years will be ancient academic history. Over the next few months, juniors should make a special effort to do their best work in their favorite classes. Ask questions. Contribute to the class discussion. Show their teacher that they're interested in the material. Do a memorable project or presentation. Colleges will see their grades on their transcript, but teachers' letters are how colleges learn the story behind the grades. Encourage your junior student to make the most of these last few months.
The Exchange Club Youth of the Year Award

The Exchange Club will be awarding a local scholarship in the amount of $500 for one male and one female from a local high school. The top five candidates will be entered into the District competition with the potential of receiving an additional $1250. This award highly emphasizes community and school involvement, not just academics. Please complete the attached application and return to your counselor no later than Monday, February 22nd.
