Annual Statewide Meeting: Recap
August 28-30, 2015

The 10th Annual Statewide Meeting was a huge success!  This conference is an educational event that provides opportunities for individuals and families affected by inherited bleeding disorders to learn about their disorder and how to better manage it as well as meet and share with other community members.

At this year's meeting, adults were able to take advantage of educational sessions covering joint health, vonWillebrand Disease, dental health, coping with anxiety and depression and much more!  The kids enjoyed a visit from the fire department as well as a tour of a fire truck and there was also a game room set up for the entire weekend, stocked full of activities like air hockey, a craft corner, movies, and more!  We also had a fun evening at Sun Splash!

Check below in the Community Voices section to view a family's personal video from this year's Annual Statewide Meeting and learn about their experiences of having a child with hemophilia.

DONOR APPRECIATION
A Tribute to Jeff Rhodes
Thanks for all you do!

At our 10th Annual Statewide
meeting we honored Jeff Rhodes, Director of Restaurant Operations for Macayo's Restaurants, as our 2015 Volunteer of the Year.  Jeff and Macayo's first got involved by volunteering at our annual Salsa Challenge over 10 years ago. Upon accepting the award of Volunteer of the Year, Jeff shared a story about the moment he became committed to the AHA. During his first Salsa Challenge, a young Camp HONOR boy with hemophilia walked up to Jeff and thanked him for all of his support to our cause.

Jeff's creative ideas are endless, many of which we have incorporated into our events.  From going out of his way to help us secure sponsors and donors, to the event layout, to music and bartenders; Jeff will jump in and help wherever and whenever he can.  It is his huge heart, commitment and passion that has helped us raise significant funds and allowed us to provide necessary funding for our programs and services.

Jeff is one of the most genuine people who cares deeply about our cause.  We are forever grateful for Jeff's dedication and support to the AHA and for all that Macayo's has done for us over the years!

Please save the date for our 2016 Salsa Challenge: March 5th & 6th 2016 at Steele Indian School Park!

ADVOCACY & HEALTHCARE
Attention All Advocates!
Get involved, call us at (602) 955-3947!

The new legislative session in Arizona is fast approaching, and it is gearing up to be a very busy one! Lawmakers from across the state will be attending their committees and sessions in January to debate on important issues affecting our state. They will meet with constituents in their districts, lobbyists, and other legislators to get the information that will shape their decisions.

Now is a great opportunity for individuals and families to meet with their respective Legislators before the session begins. Many of them are currently available in their District offices in your local area, others are able to meet in their offices at the State Capitol, and some are willing to meet in more informal situations like over lunch, or at a library.  The Arizona Hemophilia Association would like to help you to take advantage of this time to share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns with your Legislators by setting up an appointment for you or your family to meet with them.

More than anything we would like you to simply share your personal experiences with how bleeding disorders have affected your life. We are happy to work with you to help you get your points across, and can set up conference calls, planning, and or coaching meetings to help you feel prepared when speaking with your Legislators. Please contact us to set up a meeting before the January session begins.

Your Legislators will be deciding and voting on issues that affect everyone in the state, and their decisions can be especially impactful for vulnerable communities like ours. One of the most important things that we can do to make sure that these decisions aren't harmful for people with bleeding disorders is to meet with Legislators to share our experiences, concerns, and needs. Because our community is so small, we can't simply assume that someone else will speak out on our behalf. We need members of our community to take the initiative and speak out about the problems that affect us.

If this is something that you would like to do, please reach out to Brent at the Arizona Hemophilia Association, (602) 955-3947, to get an appointment set up, or to find out more information about how you can help to advocate and raise awareness about bleeding disorder issues.

We are the Chaira Family &
This is Our Story
We have two beautiful children, Rey (4) and Natalie (2).  Rey was diagnosed with severe hemophilia when he was only five months old.  We had no idea he had this disorder.  It all started one morning when he woke up and wasn't his usual self.  He was very lethargic, vomiting, and had a fever, all the symptoms of the common cold, we thought.  Since he wasn't feeling any better, we decided to take him to the hospital.  Upon arriving, he started seizing.  They immediately ran all kinds of tests, and within minutes, the cat scan results came back wtih horrible news.  Rey had a brain hemorrhage. After further tests were done, it was concluded that Rey has hemophilia. At that point, doctors were giving us the worst case scenario, Rey had a 50/50 chance of surviving if surgery was needed, because his factor levels were not controlled at that time.

This was probably the hardest situation we had ever encountered.  We were devastated.  After being in the hospital for about a month, Google had become our best friend.  We had so many questions and felt we needed to find all the answers.  Our life had completely changed.  We felt we had to learn and know everything to get our son to a better place.  We couldn't help but feel alone, even if we had the love and support of our friends and family.  It wasn't that we weren't grateful, we felt alone because as much as they tried to sympathize with our situation, they would never know exactly what we were going through because they weren't also going through it. We also felt we had to be strong and not show weakness to everyone, so they knew we could handle the situation and take care of our son.

Hemophilia affected all of our lives that day in so many ways, including
introducing us to the Arizona Hemophilia Association.  We are so grateful with the AHA that has helped us to deal with this disorder and all of the ups and downs that come with it.  Through the AHA we have had the opportunity to be around families that are fighting the same battle we are.  Being involved brings this warm feeling in our hearts that reminds us we are not alone in this journey.  We are very blessed to be a part of the AHA and are grateful for everything they have done for our family!

Let's Face It, Recalls Can Happen
An HFA reminder about the Patient Notification System (PNS)

I n February, the HFA launched a Take Action about the Patient Notification System (PNS) after they learned that only 30% of the bleeding disorders community was registered for PNS.  In just seven months, over 500 patients, caregivers, and medical professionals have registered for the PNS. Although this is great progress, we still have a way to go to ensure that every patient living with a bleeding disorder is registered.  The PNS is a valuable resource for patients and their families living with bleeding disorders. PNS will alert you within 24 hours of a recall or withdrawal of your therapy products, and it is fast, free, and confidential.

Remember: it's your responsibility to sign up for this vital service.
