Students Enjoy Annual Roman Banquet
Lakehill's halls were invaded by Trojan warriors, togas, and mystical creatures on February 11 as the seventh and eighth grade Latin classes marched their way back in time to attend the annual Roman Banquet.
Each year, students travel to Stratos Global Tavern to dine like Roman royalty on ancient delicacies that would make any Roman's mouth water.
"The best part of the Roman Banquet is always the food," says eighth grader Stella Palmer. "It makes you feel like you're actually a part of the culture." The students take this trip in conjunction with their Latin courses, in order to bring their studies to life.
Once they arrive, students are treated to an afternoon full of feasting, as well as Latin trivia Bingo and a costume contest.

Senior Helps Others Remember American Presidents
Lakehill faculty and students were treated to a special Presidents' Day celebration on Tuesday, complete with songs, interesting facts, and Presidential trivia. The celebration was coordinated by senior Brandon Douglas.
Douglas, who was selected last year to attend the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference sponsored by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, developed the program during his application process. Recipients were encouraged to implement a patriotic awareness program in their schools after attending the conference.
"I feel like Presidents' Day is an often overlooked holiday," said Douglas. "I researched the beginnings of the holiday and how it evolved over time. I wanted to share that information with others in an entertaining way."
Douglas decorated the cafeteria and held the special event during each lunch period on Tuesday. Table decorations included information cards with fun Presidential facts. He shared his knowledge with each group, and even added accompaniment on the harmonica to a variety of patriotic songs.
"I feel like everyone responded really well to the event," he said.
"I really liked the music he played," said fourth grader
Brendan Hall
. "He's really good on the harmonica and I liked the way he remixed it. I even learned some things about the Presidents."

Latricia Davis. "E
ach year we do a little better than the last."
Each member of the team selects specific topics of interest to specialize in for the competition. "I love watching them come together as a larger group to challenge and spur each other on," Davis said.

National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Reed Henry
Reed Henry has attended Lakehill since the sixth grade. His favorite class was Pop Culture which he took his freshman year. His favorite memory at Lakehill was standing on the Lighthouse Rock at Palo Duro Canyon during Adventure Week in seventh grade.
Reed plays on the Varsity Baseball team and performed in last spring's drama production of
Design for Murder. His favorite activities are playing baseball and going to the movies.
Reed has applied to the University of British Colombia, University of Oregon, University of Washington, Texas A&M, University of Texas at Arlington, and Texas State University. He plans to major in geography.
The biggest influence on Reed's life is his dad. He is going to miss the small sense of community at Lakehill and the feeling that his teachers really know him and care about him.

This Week at the ESC |
|
Eighth graders conducted an experiment involving the solar houses they built on a previous trip. They discovered how different light aspects and intensities affected their houses, and developed ideas on how to better design them. They also assembled and flew solar balloons.
Fifth grade students revisited the compost bin they helped to start, and learned about the role of fungus in decomposition. They observed different fungi from around the ESC as well as the mushrooms that they grew in mushroom farms.
