WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Mary Mbiya, LOXXIV
Area Manager
 Flagstar Bank

What made you decide to go through the LO program?
It was a great way to continue to learn more and dig deeper into the community we serve and it also offered me an opportunity to network. program?

What did you think you'd get out of it?
Information on how to best serve my community, meet some local leaders and learn how / why some decisions are made. Learn about some local businesses and network.

What did you actually get from the experience?
I was able to grow both personally and professionally. In addition to #2 above, I was able to learn more about the community we serve, got an opportunity to learn more about some of the local non-profits and what some of the needs are, networked and made some life long friends.

What would you tell someone who was thinking about the Cornerstone program?
It truly is a great way to effectively and efficiently learn more about Oakland County. Knowledge is powerful because it helps us make impactful decisions. I highly recommend LO because it offers a great opportunity to make informed decisions and if you allow it, there is an opportunity for internal personal growth.

Have you made any changes since your LO graduation?
Volunteering is a part of my life, I feel that who I am has truly merged with my work life. I volunteer as a 'Financial Focus Volunteer Facilitator for Neighborhood House' working with people that have fallen on hard times. Life skills that help stimulate financial independence are taught in the class. It keeps me grounded and I feel that I am constantly learning from  the participants. I was also promoted to Area Manager. I have grown both personally and professionally.

A Message from the Director, Nancy Maurer

Old School Leadership: Lessons from the LO Breakfast of Champions with Jack Aronson

Like many of the nearly 90 people at the recent Breakfast of Champions session with Jack Aronson, founder of Garden Fresh Gourmet, I was eager to hear his story about what it takes to lead people and an organization successfully. I mean, he sold his salsa start-up to Campbell's for $231 million - the guy must be doing something right. Not to mention his new venture, Clean Planet Foods, is poised to take off in similar fashion.

I'm not sure exactly what I expected - maybe stalwart words of wisdom on how the local "mom and pop shop" can still make it big in the world of ever increasing mega-corporations. What I didn't anticipate was this refreshingly simple takeaway message: Old school leadership is alive and well and can still breed success.

One of the hottest topics in organizations right now surrounds the latest generation of workforce talent and how they are changing the way we work and lead.
