Mental health services for women, girls and children

Unique Needs.
Women, girls and children have unique mental health needs. Consider the following facts*:
  • Women and girls are more frequently vulnerable to violence and trauma.
  • Women are 70 percent more likely than men to suffer from depression.
  • Women often have multiple roles, family responsibilities, and experience a higher incidence of poverty as compared to men.
  • Women with mental health issues are more highly stigmatized and stereotyped.
  • Teen girls may be at higher risk for depression, anxiety, or even suicide.
  • Childhood is an important time to build mental wellness. Half of all mental illnesses begin before age 14.
