Happy Thanksgiving and Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
|
This was a short, but full, week at BPY. Starting with parent-teacher conferences on Sunday and an incredible 8th grade trip to the UN at the invitation of the Ambassador Danny Danon on Monday, we ended the school week with our wonderful annual BPYPTO Thanksgiving Bake Sale and our in-school Thanksgiving celebrations. |
|
None of these events and programs happen on their own - they only occur because of the efforts and dedication of our amazing staff members and volunteers. How fitting that after such a full week, within such a compressed time frame, we all take a moment to share some words of thanks: take a minute to email your child's teacher and let him or her know how much you appreciate the experience your child is having in school, reach out to the BPYPTO ([email protected]) to let our parent volunteers know that you are grateful for their efforts to support our school community, or help your child write a note or draw a picture to say "thank you" to his or her siblings, grandparents, or teachers.
Of course, as I reminded the children at our Thanksgiving feast today, we must also make sure to convey our gratitude to Hashem and one of the best ways to do this is through tefillah. Please reinforce this message by reminding your children to say tefillah each day over the long weekend.
It is so important to show our appreciation and to teach our children to do the same. It not only lets others know that we are grateful for their efforts, but it also reminds us to appreciate our own blessings, leading to greater happiness and fulfillment in our own lives.
Happy Thanksgiving and Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Rosh HaYeshiva

"My country tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty..." We began our elementary school Thanksgiving Feast with song, including many favorites celebrating our country and our American heritage. Creative centerpieces made by our students, a delicious traditional Thanksgiving meal, and expressions of gratitude made the feast especially meaningful. Thank you to BPY music teacher Morah Stacey Mahpour for creating our BPY Thanksgiving Songbook and leading the students and staff members in such beautiful singing.
See more BPY Thanksgiving pictures in the "Thanksgiving 2015" album on BPY's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/benporatyosef.

Early Childhood Thanksgiving Pow Wow |
Early childhood students kicked off their Thanksgiving celebrations with their annual Pow Wow with Chief Morah Jessica. Following the pau wau (meaning "people coming together") tradition of some indigenous Americans, students gathered together to sing songs, celebrate, and make new friends.

Pilgrim and Wampanoag Museum
|
First graders studied the housing, food, and clothing of the Pilgrims and Wampanoag and then created a museum to share what they learned, including interactive models of Pilgrim and Wampanoag houses and informative signs describing the exhibits. Other classes and visitors were invited to tour their museum throughout the day on Wednesday.

BPY eighth graders were thrilled to attend an event at the UN, hosted by UN Ambassador Danny Danon and the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations, dedicated to remembering the untold story of 850,000 Jewish
refugees from Arab countries. The students got to meet
Ambassador Danon and enjoy a fantastic concert by Moroccan Israeli singer, songwriter, and composer Shimon Buskila
- his first ever solo performance in the US! A huge thank you to BPY founder, past president, and parent Steven Sarao for organizing this incredible experience for our eighth grade students!
Shimon Buskila performed selections in Hebrew and Moroccan Arabic. Click below to view a clip:

Living Legacy Olive Oil Press
|
Take some olives, squish them, press them, spin the juice to separate out the oil, add a wick and light your Chanukiah! As part of their preparations for Chanukah, early childhood students got to make their own olive oil with the Living Legacy Olive Press. Thank you Rabbi Grossbaum and Living Legacy for another incredible hands-on educational holiday program.

BPYPTO Thanksgiving Bake Sale |
A tremendous THANK YOU and KOL HAKAVOD to the BPYPTO and all the amazing volunteers who baked, cooked, wrapped, and sold delicious treats and soups for our Annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale!!!
|
BPYPTO Thanksgiving Crafts for Kids
|
Incredibly creative BPYPTO volunteers helped students create amazing Thanksgiving-themed craft projects during the bake sale on Tuesday night. Children were able to make their own pumpkin spice latte sugar scrub hostess gifts, fruit cornucopias, Hershey's kiss acorns, and gratitude jars. Thank you to the PTO for adding this wonderful new creative element to our annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale!

In a time of year saturated with holiday festivities, good will, and gift-giving, let's refocus our energies on ways we can make our own school and local communities better! Initiate a conversation this Shabbat with your loved ones about the importance and impact of giving in time, energy, and resources with acts of tzedakah, tikkun olam, and chesed. It's the BPY way to take ownership and action in bettering our world!

Toddler Turkey Thanksgiving Cards
Gan Parparim made beautiful Thanksgiving cards. They traced their hands to make a turkey shape, decorated them with feathers, and wrote why they are thankful to their parents.
Second Grade Bnot Sherut
BPY's Bnot Sherut, Lilach and Shira visited 2C to do a fun activity based on the book
דירה להשכיר.
Third Grade Reader's Workshop
Third graders practiced retelling stories by using their five fingers as prompts. Each finger represents an event in the story and the spaces between their fingers remind them to share their thoughts and feelings about each event.

Gratitude - More Perspectives, Part II
by Stanley Fischman
|
This column is based upon a dvar Torah by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks for parshat Eikev, entitled "The Power of Gratitude"
(August 2015).
|
|
In describing the initiation of the holiday of Thanksgiving, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks quotes Abraham Lincoln's proclamation of October 31, 1863. Reflecting on the gifts we enjoy, even in time of war he stated, "No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High G-d, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy...I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States ...to set apart and observe the last Thursday in November next ... as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."
Rabbi Sacks points out that our tefillot are replete with expressions of thankfulness and gratitude. We teach our children to start each day with the words of "modeh ani".....

This year, Ben Porat Yosef is participating in TWO toy drives: the Bergen County toy drive and Chai Lifeline's toy drive.
Both drives conclude on November 30th.
The Bergen County drive is a local collaborative effort across many Jewish schools and synagogues. Toys are distributed to a variety of organizations including Project Ezrah, Tomchei Shabbos, and Sharsheret. In addition to this, Chai Lifeline runs its own toy drive.
Chanukah is such an exciting time for our children. It is also a time when they can pause to feel grateful for what they have and share with others. In order to make these drives meaningful, please talk about them with your children. Take them shopping with you for a Chanukah gift to give away or purchase something together with them online.
New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off in the box located outside the BPY front office until November 30.
