Binghamton University
Congratulations to Peekskill High School track star Chelsea Ogindo on her scholarship to Binghamton University! Yesterday, in front of friends and family, Ogindo signed a national letter of intent to attend Binghamton next fall.

"Chelsea is what you would consider a true student athlete and because of that, Mr. Ogindo and Chelsea are sitting at this table today," said Peekskill Athletic Director Lou Panzanaro during the signing ceremony. "The University of Binghamton is a great academic school and has a tremendous track program and we are so proud that Chelsea is going to take her talent there."

Fall Sports Awards Night Honors Peekskill Athletes and Coaches

Thank you to all who recently came out to celebrate our Fall Sports Awards Night. Our athletes had a great season and we couldn't be prouder! See the list below for a complete list of athlete honorees.

We could not speak to the successes of our fall athletes without mentioning a few key Peekskill players and coaches.

First, congratulations to Peekskill High School junior, Oswald Annang who was named All-Section and All-Section MVP this season. Annang finished tied for second place for most goals scored with 29 goals in Section 1. He had a total of 5 assists, was one of the captains of his team and had four game winning goals. Annang was also named the LOHUD Journal News Boys Soccer Player of the Week from September 28 - October 3, the League MVP and Peekskill Schools' Fall Sports Player of the Month in September.

Congratulations are also in order for Peekskill High School senior Chelsea Ogindo, our beloved Track and Field /Cross Country star. Ogindo not only received multiple awards this season, she also accepted a scholarship from Binghamton University and publicly signed her letter of intent at Peekskill High school on November 17. (See above.)

We also want to give a shout out to two of our coaches, Cami Blazejewski and Jonathan Iasillo, both of whom were named "Coach of the Year" by peers in Conference 1, League C.

Congratulations to the PHS Select Chorus, better known as the City Singers, who were the highlight of the Westchester Chordsmen's 2nd Annual A Cappella Festival held at Mamaroneck High School this weekend. Our students are shown here with the medals they received after performing at the concert.

The teacher evaluation system that was supposed to be implemented throughout New York's public school districts won't be, this year.

According to northcountypublicradio.com, fully 90 percent of the state's more than 700 school districts have been granted waivers so they can delay implementation of the system, which became law in the spring.

Among the many local school districts requesting and receiving the waiver are Lakeland, Ossining, Pearl River, Peekskill, Scarsdale and Yorktown.

"The waiver extension allows districts and their respective associations additional time to formulate a plan relative to teacher and administrator evaluations," said Peekskill Superintendent Dr. David Fine. "This is a vital component and should be mindfully coordinated as it relates to instructional expectations and student success. Our waiver was approved a few weeks back and we continue to collaborate with our teachers and administrators in order to design an appropriate APPR plan for all stakeholders. In addition, as a region we are consistently working together with respect to best approaches and defining various directions from the state so as our focus remains on our practice, pedagogy, and students."

Peekskill High School College Fair Helps Students Plan for Future

When the Peekskill High School College Fair began almost 20 years ago, it started with a modest six colleges. Over the years, the PHS College Fair has grown tremendously and at its most recent event on October 22, PHS welcomed nearly 50 local colleges to the school to participate in the fair.

The event, which was organized by the school's College Resource Center Liaison Maria Gordineer and the PHS Counseling Department, was geared towards junior and senior students. The morni ng featured representatives from a variety of colleges who came to answer any questions the students might have regarding college enrollment.

"The students who come here today will have the chance to speak with some of the same college representatives that will be looking at their applications when our juniors and seniors submit them in the near future," explained PHS Counseling Department Chair Noel Cabassa. "Our students are here to learn about what they need in terms of SAT scores and GPAs as well as the different requirements needed for the programs they're interested in."

Woodside Harvest Fest Celebrates the Season

At Woodside Elementary, Mrs. Montoya's Transitional Kindergarten class and Mrs. Rosa's Transitional Grade 1 class celebrated the season with a Harvest Fest at school today. After spending the past few days studying the life cycles of pumpkins and experimenting with the gourdes, today students had the opportunity to go outside and "pick" their very own pumpkin in the school's creatively crafted pumpkin patch. Students brought their selections inside where they continued to learn about pumpkins while decorating them.
Oakside Students Honor Local Veterans with Handmade Cards

Thanks to Oakside Elementary teacher Martha Lynch who recently sent us some photos of the cards her students made for our local veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Ms. Lynch delivered cards not only from her class, but from multiple Oakside classes, to the Montrose Veterans Home where the residents took much joy in reading the students' thoughtful notes.
