GUETTARD, Jean-Étienne [1715-1786] & BUACHE, Philippe (1700-1773) cartographer

1751. Paris, De l'Imprimerie Royale, Académie Royale des Sciences
CONSIDERED THE FIRST ATTEMPT TO PRODUCE GEOLOGICAL MAPS.
This book is considered a very important milestone in the history of geological science, the very first in series of important works that are highly-prized by collectors of early geological maps and that solidify Guettard's reputation as the father of all national geological surveys. Other later Guettard maps published by the l'Academie royale include the first geological map of Egypt and Palestine (1751 volume), the first maps of America and Switzerland (1752), A collaboration with the famous chemist Antoine Lavoisier
Guettard's two 1746 dated and printed Georgaphical maps (but published in 1751), prepared by Buache, include; #1 Carte Mineralogique sur la Nature du Terrein d'une Portion de l'Europe (9 x 12.5 inches, plate 31), a general map of western Europe extending from the Pyrenees to Iceland, and #2 Carte Mineralogique Ou l'on voit la Nature et la Situation des Terreins qui traversent la France et l'Angleterre (10.5 x 12.3 inches, plate 32), a map that extends from Auvergne in France to central England. This map is generally regarded as the first attempt (or first draft) to produce a geological map....

COPWAY, George (KAH-GE-GA-GAH-BOWH) [1818 - 1869]

1851. New York, J.C. Ricker
This was Copway's third, and last, book. Born in Canada (1818, Upper Canada near the mouth of the Trent River), Copway was a full-blood Ojibwa and the son of John Copway, a Mississauga chief and medicine man; according to his claims he was, by inheritance, a chief of the Mississauga. He first lived a traditional Ojibwa life, but in adolescence was drawn to Methodism and eventually became a missionary. Thereafter his life was lived at the margin between Indian and white cultures, and it was a checkered one - as is suggested by the fact that his greatest successes were not in Canada but in the United States....

Scarce collection of letters from Lord Nelson to his mistress Lady Emma Hamilton.
"The publisher, Thomas Lovewell, went bankrupt in 1817 and was forced to put the letters up for sale. They were purchased by Croker acting on behalf of the Admiralty and Government who were anxious that they were kept out of public circulation. Harrison is often cited as the editor but my own research years ago suggests that Oliver (a servant with whom Emma had quarrelled} was the culprit - although Harrison may have been involved too." quoted from Michael Nash, UK.......
