Badger Girls State HUHS Representatives
Congratulations to Laura Kregel, Brittany Rusch and Malloire Smits  on being selected to represent HUHS at 2016 Badger Girls State. The Girls State program was organized as a national Americanism activity by the 1937 National Convention. The first Girls Nation session was held in Washington D.C. in 1947. The program is a practical application of Americanism and good citizenship. The entire program is a non-partisan, non-political attempt to teach and instill in the youth of America a love of God and country.
The American Legion Auxiliary is working to keep patriotism a part of the education of every child, a patriotism that teaches love of America through knowledge of how our state governments operate.
The legacy from those Auxiliary members who chartered the first Girls State remains.  The lessons learned at American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State enable these young ladies to become more informed citizens in how their state government functions.

Student Participate in Trig Star Test
On March 22nd, 19 students participated in our 9th Annual Trig Star Test.  Trig Star in a national contest sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and locally sponsored by Matt O'Rourke of Kapur and Associates.  It challenges students with a practical application of trigonometry to find missing lengths and angles with the same precision used by land surveyors.  The test is a one hour test that uses right triangle trigonometry, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines and basic circle formulas.  By participating, all students earned a certificate and are eligible to apply for a scholarship in the field of land surveying/civil engineering.  The top three local winners won a cash prize with the first place winner receiving a plaque.  This year's winner, senior Kyle Siegl, had a score of 86 out of 100 possible points.  Second place was sophomore Kylie Grinwald, and third place was sophomore Emily Perschbacher.  The top three are pictured in the attachment.

Sgt. Brandon Williams visits English 10
On Thursday, April 21st, Sgt. Brandon Williams came and spoke to Mrs. Herrmann's English 10 classes, sharing his experiences serving in the US military as well as his deployment to Afghanistan.  Because students are currently reading Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, they had the opportunity to hear yet another perspective from Sgt. Williams, who talked about both the benefits and drawbacks of military service, including professional and educational opportunities, camaraderie, and post-traumatic stress.  We thank him for his service and his willingness to spend time with our students.
Congratulations to Mrs. Herrmann - Teacher of the Year
HUHS is proud to announce this years Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Katie Herrmann, an English Teacher and National Board Certified Educator. Mrs. Herrmann, a proud Minnesota native, was raised in the Twin Cities where she developed her love for the outdoors, animals, adventure, and all things literature. Some day - maybe when her daughter goes away to college - she hopes to return to this cosmopolitan, nostalgic utopia that so profoundly impressed itself upon her. Mrs. Herrmann  met her husband, Michael, in college, and then moved to the Milwaukee area after graduation, where she attended graduate school at UW-Milwaukee. Since then, they've made Hartford their home and have created a tiny little family, consisting of their 12-year-old daughter, Noelle, who is - pardon the cliched phrase - nothing other than their pride and joy. They also have a crazy dog, Lillie, and a lazy horse, Libby, who both take up a lot of their time (and money!). For fun, they like to spend time at their cabin in Northern Minnesota, where they hike, kayak, search for wildlife, and tell hair-raising stories around the campfire at night. Mrs. Herrmann was inspired to become a teacher by her parents, both of whom loved spending time with and entertaining children. Needless to say, she was lucky to have had remarkable role models who showed her the importance of finding the good in all people.
The students and staff are lucky to have an outstanding teacher like Mrs. Herrmann, congratulations!!
