The Blossoming Universe of Violet Diamond
Miss Jane recommends The Blossoming Universe of Violet Diamond by Brenda Woods

The Blossoming Universe of Violet Diamond explores the world of an 11-year-old bi-racial girl growing up in a white family. Making her feel even more isolated is the fact that she attends a mostly white school in a mostly white town. Since her black father died before she was born, Violet desperately seeks a connection with the black side of her family. Soon she has the opportunity to meet her grandmother, her father's mother, a black artist from Los Angeles. The story feels authentic when it reveals a devastating mistake made by Violet's mother and the messy, complicated emotions that follow. Other things don't ring as true: Violet's word list, for example, seems like a forced attempt to introduce new vocabulary to middle school readers. All in all, it's a very moving story about the importance of belonging.
