High School GT Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert, Rouse Theatre, April 28th. 7:00pm
The public is invited to the High School G/T Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert where they will share the stage with the  U.S. Navy Band Commodores , the Navy's premier jazz ensemble.
HCPSS Partners with Horizon Foundation to Offer and Promote Healthy Eating, New Fruit and Vegetable Bars to Open at Three Elementary Schools
The school system will open fresh fruit and vegetable bars in April at three HCPSS elementary schools: Bollman Bridge, Laurel Woods and Talbott Springs. These fruit and vegetable bars will be stocked with a selection of seasonal offerings such as red grapes, tangerines, cucumbers and Romaine lettuce. This two-year pilot program is funded by a $200,000 grant from the Horizon Foundation and will double the amount of fruit and vegetables offered at lunchtime in the schools. 
Columbia Wide Clean Up Day
Saturday, April 23rd, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Starting Location:  Stevens Forest Neighborhood Center Parking Lot
Meet and clean as a group.  The group will leave the SFNC parking lot and travel through open space behind the center and surrounding area on a mapped out route. 
Kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  We'll provide trash bags and trash pokers along with water and a snack bar.  Please bring  gardening gloves if you have them.

Oakland Mills Elections and Plant Sale
Saturday, April 30th
Be sure to stop by The Other Barn on Saturday, April 30th and VOTE. Voting begins at 8:30am and ends at 5:00pm.
The plant sale will begin at 9:00am.  There will be a variety of annuals, hanging baskets and herbs.  Cash or check only please. Come early for the best selection!

Happy Earth Day!  We hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather and taking in the wonders of spring.  It is a busy time at all of the Oakland Mills schools and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Below are some of the highlights.

HCPSS Expands Summer Food Service to 
Four Locations 
The Howard County Public School System is pleased to announce it is expanding access to healthy meals for needy children over the summer months. The 2016 Summer Food Service Program will be available Monday-Friday, from 12:30-2 p.m., from June 27-July 29, 2016 at four locations:
  • Phelps Luck Elementary
  • Laurel Woods Elementary School
  • Long Reach High School
  • Talbott Springs Elementary School (12:45-2:15 p.m.)
Meals will be provided to children ages 3 to 18 without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Parents or guardians do not need to apply to get free summer meals for their children. They can simply bring their child to one of the summer meal sites.

Important News from the Oakland Mills Education Committee
Thank you to Howard  County Board of Education members; Ellen Flynn Giles, Ann DeLacy and Janet Siddiqui for coming to share updates affecting Oakland Mills schools at our April 12th OMCA Board meeting.  Thank you to those who were able to join us and provide feedback.
The next OM Education meeting will be held May 10th at 6pm.  We hope to see you there.

The "Sticking Together" Project
This past Thursday OMHS students were surprised to come to school and find positivity all around.  Thank you OMHS National Art Honor Society.
OM Music Travels to Nashville
Last week, the OM Music Department traveled to Nashville to perform as well as participate in clinics at Vanderbilt University. As noted by Mrs. Elpus, "It was an unbelievable four days that profoundly impacted our students."

OM Baseball Wins Against Wilde Lake
OM baseball defeated Wilde Lake yesterday 12-0. Tim Brumbaugh pitched five shut-out innings, allowing only one hit.
Girls Lacrosse Wins Against Lansdowne
OM's girls lacrosse team defeated Lansdowne yesterday. Senior Morgan Carroll led the team with four goals, and Hannah Smelkinson scored the go-ahead goal in the last few seconds to give the team a 9-8 win.
Softball Defeats Wilde Lake
The OM softball team defeated Wilde Lake 17-7 yesterday. Consistency was the name of the game, as the girls scored in every inning.
Jr. Sr. Art Show
Nine OMHS art students (see below) were selected to participate in the 26th Annual Jr. Sr. Portfolio Show. Their work will be displayed at the Board of Education Gallery from April 15 - May 18. You can view the student artwork in the  Jr. Sr. Art Show gallery here on our website.

Boosters to Host "Spring Fling" TOMORROW NIGHT!
Please join OMHS Booster Club for the "Spring Fling" on April 23rd at 5:00pm at Second Chance for an evening of live music, the silent auction and games of skill tournaments (billiards, darts and cornhole.) $25 covers food and drink to include unlimited select beer, wine, soda and iced tea. An additional $25 open bar option is also available. A fun evening with all proceeds going directly back to OMHS clubs, activities and athletics! Tickets are available at  www.omhsbooster.org , the concession hut during sporting events, Second Chance Saloon or from a Booster Board Member.

Our event will take place during field day on May 27th.  This is a fun and exciting event for our entire school as we work together to raise money for the American Heart Association and save lives!  If we raise $5000, every student in the school will get a jump rope.
