ART EVENT FEATURING CHUCK MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHIC ART
|
|
Chuck Murphy |
|
Over 60 guests attended an invitation only special event on Tuesday night at The Mezzanine in downtown Colorado Springs, hosted by Special Kids Special Families (SKSF) to help raise funds for Zach's Place at the Laurie Hillyard Family Center. Many pieces of photographic art were graciously donated by local artist and philanthropist Chuck Murphy, owner of Murphy Constructors. Chuck's passion for the beauty of nature and inspirational travel adventures were truly captured in every donated piece displayed.
"Photography is something that I've loved my entire life," Chuck Murphy said. "It taught me to see and appreciate ... people and nature and the world."*
Over $5,000 was raised during the event where Chuck's art was auctioned off by Auctioneer, Kevin Patterson, to the highest bidder.
"We are grateful to Chuck Murphy for his donated art, Hoff & Leigh for obtaining the venue, along with all of the donated food from area restaurants, and of course the event organizers, volunteers and donors that made this event so successful," states Linda Ellegard, Executive Director of SKSF, "we couldn't have done it without them!"
According to event organizer, Susan Saksa, "There were many guests that attended this event who have never heard of Zach's Place and learned about their valuable services for the first time. We are grateful for the connections we established today."
Zach's Place respite and child care program is one of three main programs at Special Kids Special Families. SKSF also serves adults with developmental disabilities and provides foster and adoption services.

ZACH'S PLACE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Can you help us reach our goal?
Zach's Place at the Laurie Hillyard Family Center is ONE of ONLY TWO licensed daycare providers in the state and currently
the only one in the Pikes Peak region with the focus and training to provide both respite and daycare for children with intellectual, physical and emotional disabilities.
The Capital Campaign is tasked with raising funds to purchase the current facility at 4795 Granby Circle in Colorado Springs, to ensure efficient, financial responsibility and future assurances that the program will always have a suitable permanent home.
As we continue to raise awareness and funds to support the Zach's Place Capital Campaign, we have raised 75% (nearly $387,000) of our goal of $500,000, but we need your help to fill the gap!

JOEY'S PLACE
Therapeutic Gardening by Planting Flowers

Joey's Place program participants were eager to help in an activity planned by volunteer, Julie Hudak. Adults planted vegetable and flower seedlings using lamps to help germinate the seeds. Once the weather improves and the sun begins to shine the lamps will be removed. Constant caring is needed for these plants to grow which teaches patience, vigilance and responsibility. Thanks Julie for your tireless efforts and teaching these therapeutic techniques to our clients. VOLUNTEER SPOT
LIGHT
School of the Deaf & Blind
A big thank you to the School of the Deaf and Blind for joining us and volunteering at Zach's Place! Classmates from the school helped
clean Zach's Place top to bottom, even individual toys. This is the third time students from the school have volunteered at Zach's Place.
"The great thing about some of the organizations that help us out is they get to know the children and the staff and the center and what we do. And, they'll come back and want to volunteer again and again," said Zach's Place Director, Renae Isakson.
It's a partnership that both parties plan to continue in the future.
The students interacted with our youth and also did some major organizing for us - your help is greatly appreciated!

THE NETWORK MEETING
Monday, May 13th
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Families raising children with special needs repeatedly express frustration about not having the resources they require to not only meet their personal needs but those of their children. These requests led Special Kids Special Families to create a forum where families can learn about resources in the community as well as gain support and interact with other parents on the same journey who can relate their own personal struggles.
The Network meets on a quarterly basis. Please JOIN US for a relaxing time with people who understand what your journey is like. If parents need childcare, please discuss when you RSVP. Pre-registration required.
