Celebrate Administrative Professional Day with Shelley's Flowers
Let's Play Ball: The Sea Dogs, Maine's Baseball Team
Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main Street in Damariscotta will host its weekly lunch and learn program on Wed, Apr 27, at 11:15 am.  Following the luncheon Chris Cameron, Assistant General Manager and Director of Media Relations for Maine's own baseball team and Red Sox affiliate the Sea Dogs will share his perspective on this year's Seadog's team along with a bit of history.

Learn more about what's going on at Hadlock Field the Sea Dogs' home stadium which is named after long-time Portland High School baseball coach Edison Hadlock.  Discover why those who wear the Seadogs uniform cultivate a connection with  the fans and community that fosters a special relationship not found in big city ballparks and why Portland, Maine has just been named the "Best Road City" in Minor League Baseball in Baseball America's inaugural "Best of the Minors" list.  Perhaps Chris will even share a few behind the scenes stories about the team's official mascot Slugger the Sea Dog. Luncheon guests will even have a chance to win a couple of Seadogs tickets.

Professional Baseball in Maine dates back to the last century.  Since 1901 and the advent of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (Minor League Baseball's governing body) professional baseball has called nine different Maine Cities home, stretching from Calais to Old Orchard Beach.  The Sea Dogs are Portland's first entry since 1949, the last season of the Portland Pilots.

Chris joined the Sea Dogs on a full-time basis in January of 1999 after spending two part-time years with the organization. He completed an internship with the Detroit Tigers Spring Training facility in Lakeland, Florida in 1998. With the Sea Dogs, Chris has worked in concessions, served as the team's Director of Ticketing, and Media Relations Director.

Chris was promoted to Assistant General Manager/ Director of Media Relations at the conclusion of the 2006 season. In 2005, he was named Public Relations Director of the Year for all Minor League Sports by MinorLeagueNews.com.  Chris also earned Southern New Hampshire University's "Sport Management" award. He proudly serves on the "Steering Committee" for STRIVE. Chris resides in South Portland with his wife Sarah and dog Tilly.

Luncheon Reservations are required.  Please call 563-1363 by noon on Monday, April 18 to make your luncheon reservation (Vegetable Chile). For those over 60 years of age the suggested donation is $5.00 per person.  For all other community members Coastal's lunch and learn program is an affordable dining choice at $6.00 per person.

Local Partners Support Citizen Scientists Monitoring Coastal Waters
"The atmosphere of excitement, enthusiasm, and commitment in the room was palpable," enthused Jim Belano a retired fisherman and participant in TORCH, the Training for Observation and Research of Coastal Habitats, a one day workshop hosted by the University of Maine's Darling Marine Center in Walpole on April 10. Damariscotta River Association (DRA), the Maine Coastal Observing Alliance (MCOA) and the University of Maine Darling Marine Center jointly co-sponsored TORCH.

"The idea for the TORCH workshop grew out of my work with groups like MCOA and DRA and their desire to meet high standards for quality assurance, quality control and calibration of their instruments, as well as to find the proper technologies and methods to best address the issues of concern", said event founder Kathleen Thornton of the Darling Marine Center. The workshop was intended, say organizers Kathleen Thornton and Sarah Gladu of DRA, to help individuals and groups find the best indicators and measurement methods to understand the changing conditions of Maine's coastal waters, learn about current monitoring efforts, get hands-on experience with a wide variety of monitoring methods and equipment, and network with others involved in estuarine and coastal monitoring.

TORCH was attended by educators, citizen scientists, aquaculturists, fishermen, scientists, coastal residents, community groups and other interested individuals from up and down the Maine coast, as well as from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. One attendee, Tam Green who volunteers with DRA's estuary monitoring program said, "I am excited about the spectrum of attendees - there was a balance of conversation. There was scientific and anecdotal information discussed as people talked who are concerned about the same issues."

Heather Leslie, Director of the Darling Marine Center, explained enthusiastically, "I'm so glad that we at UMaine's Darling Marine Center had the opportunity to co-sponsor this event. Programs like this are vital to our mission and crucial to building the capacity we need as a nation to adapt to our changing world." In addition to representatives from government agencies, conservation groups, shellfish committees, academic institutions and industry groups, more than a dozen faculty, staff and students from the Darling Marine Center served as training session leaders and speakers.

Talks focused on reasons for monitoring, what parameters should be monitored, the concerns of various stakeholders, description of current programs, possible ways to collaborate and design monitoring programs and more. Training sessions focused on understanding the commonly measured parameters, the proper use and calibration of the gear and instrumentation used in monitoring, sampling methods and protocols, and how attendees can use public accessible monitoring data through collaborations with existing programs and organizations.

There were many opportunities for networking and discussing collaboration throughout the day.

The workshop was partially funded by Maine Sea Grant and a National Science Foundation award to Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine.
The University of Maine Darling Marine Center is located on the Damariscotta River estuary in Maine's midcoast region. The Center is committed to strengthening the knowledge of coastal and marine ecosystems and the communities who are part of them through research, teaching and outreach in Maine and world-wide. Learn more at dmc.umaine.edu. If you are interested in more information about the TORCH workshop or are interested in attending a future TORCH workshop, please email Kathleen Thornton

Start Talking-A Community Conversation: Don't Let the Blues Hang Around
Being "down in the dumps or anxious" over a period of time is not a normal part of aging. In reality it is a common problem that with help, can be overcome. These thoughts and concerns lead to the focus of Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center's 5th Annual Spring Aging in the Right Place Symposia event Start Talking: A Community Conversation "Don't Let the Blues Hang Around: Help Yourself - Treat Depression before a Crisis Happens" taking place on Thurs evening, May 5, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Belvedere Road in Damariscotta.

This spring's keynote speaker is retired weatherman Kevin Manix, co-author of "Weathering Shame".  Mr. Manix will share his personal journey of shame and stigma associated with mental health issues (depression, anxiety, and substance use) and as a result raise awareness, inspire and encourage others in the audience to embark on their own journey of self-discovery, recovery or awareness.

Following Kevin Manix's presentation there will be a panel discussion moderated by Bill Byrnes, PhD., composed of "local experts".  Our story tellers will be, Kevin's wife and social worker Linda Rota and the Reverend Bob Hargreaves.  Our professional experts will be LCSW's Brenda Hamilton and Francis Magrogan. The Start Talking steering committee has asked each of its local experts to provide an overview of and to respond to questions from program participants regarding their area of expertise as it relates to aging in the right place and the ability to remain in one's own home or community as one overcomes the stigma of depression, anxiety and related mental health issues.

Come to Spectrum's May 5 Start Talking Community Conversation and discover how getting the support one needs plays a big role in lifting the fog of depression (or anxiety) and keeping it away. Keep in mind that feeling better takes time and knowing that one can get there if one makes positive choices for oneself.

Doors will open at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Belvedere Road in Damariscotta at 5:30 p.m. at which time light refreshments provided by Healthy Lincoln County and the dining services programs of Lincoln Healthcare, the Eldercare Network of Lincoln County, The Lincoln Home and Harborview Cottage will be served.  The program will begin at 6:00 p.m.  For more information and to express your interest call 563-1363.

Community members across all generations are encouraged to attend. The issues being discussed affect not only individuals but also caregivers, entire families and communities.

Courtesy of a small charitable grant from the Camden Rotary Club there will be a complementary Knox County transportation loop to Spectrum Generations May 5 Start Talking - A Community Conversation program with stops in Camden/Rockport, Rockland, Thomaston, Warren and Waldoboro as follows:

Boat Tour Will Explore History and Mystery of Boothbay Area Lighthouses
Spice up your celebration of spring with an adventure by land and sea exploring the history and mystery of lighthouses in the Boothbay Harbor area on an exclusive tour with The Lady in The Red Cloak, hosted by MSAD 11 Adult Education.

A portion of the proceeds from the tour will go to benefit the restoration campaign at the historic Burnt Island Lighthouse.

Departing on Sat, May 21, aboard the 47-foot excursion vessel Novelty in Boothbay Harbor, the one-hour cruise through calm inshore waters will pause offshore of Ram Island Light, Cuckolds Lighthouse, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Monhegan Light and Seguin Island Light (some locations are weather permitting).

Learn the stories behind these iconic beacons; about the lives of some of the keepers and their families - daily routines, traditions and hardships, as well as the legends and haunts.

The voyage finishes with a dramatic turn as the group makes landfall on historic Burnt Island to explore the area around Burnt Island Light, built in 1821 and still a working lighthouse. The group will have exclusive access to the island as your qualified guide leads you back in time, exploring the island and learning about the historically restored facilities, including the keeper's residence and the lighthouse.

The tour will be guided by Sally Lobkowicz, the mysterious Lady in the Red Cloak from Red Cloak Haunted History Tours.

Participants will return to shore with a new and very personal understanding of the lighthouses, and the people who manned them. Stories will be told of the lives saved by these humble keepers while enduring personal privation and their own physical limits as they offered those who went to the sea in ships a hopeful light toward home.

Space is limited, so advance reservations are required for this exclusive tour. Reservations are available through MSAD 11 Adult Education, and can be made by calling 207-582-3774, by email or through this web page.
