Government Affairs Update
By Chris Dawson, AIA

Dear Chapter Members,

Bruce Johnson & I sit on the AIA PA Government Affairs Committee of 14 statewide AIA members and we work closely with AIA PA Executive Director Stephen Swarney and AIA Director of Public Affairs Holly Lubart to pursue the interests of our membership as impacted by legislation at the state and even national level.

At AIA PA's urging, last week the Pennsylvania Licensure Board approved a Canadian Reciprocity memorandum of understanding thereby allowing architects licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to practice architecture in Canada and vice versa.

Yeoman Architect- If Architect is a Verb, I Are One, Too.
By: James A. Mehaffey, AIA

Kanye West's observations aside, I have never used the word architect as a verb.  I am one.
Call me a fuddy duddy, but I speak English the way I learned it in high school. Not perfectly, mind you, but there are things I just cannot bring myself to say out loud.   I acknowledge that language does change over time, but sometimes it changes for the wrong reasons.  The simple fact that certain people recognize the word "literally" to mean the exact opposite of the word's true definition, and means "figuratively" drives me nuts.  We adjust a definition because it is used incorrectly by some inane segment of the population?  It just makes me think of about a bunch of hipsters complaining to each other about going to a club to which they really want to go, but have to pretend to their fiends that they are only really going to visit to be "ironic"...
Towards a New/Old Architecture Exhibition
Susquehanna Art Museum
By Chris Dawson, AIA
After almost 2 years of planning the Towards a New/Old Architecture exhibition opened September 13, 2015  at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg. The architectural exhibit sponsored by both AIA PA and AIA Central PA explores the use of modern architecture for additions to and renovations of the rich building stock throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to create dynamic new spaces and buildings. These renovated spaces often drive a renaissance

in historic neighborhoods within our communities. The Susquehanna Art Museum, designed by EwingCole and
opened in January 2015, joins a contemporary addition to the renovated 1926 Keystone Trust Company building at Third and
Calder Streets in Midtown Harrisburg. The museum is a prime
example of repurposing a vacant, richly-detailed neoclassical building for an exciting new purpose and communicating this rebirth via a modern addition.

Hannah was the unanimous selection of the Foundation Advisory Committee as the 2015 recipient after their review and evaluation of an impressive group of scholarship applications received during spring/summer 2015. Financial need, community involvement, volunteer activities, and examples of design work are considerations in the scholarship recipient selection process. The Foundation Advisory Committee is comprised of Past-Presidents of the AIA Central Pennsylvania Chapter.
