"All in the Family"

Scripture
Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Given that Confirmation 2016 has begun and we had a rousing time together last Sunday evening, I thought it appropriate that maybe this Sunday we should be focusing on Christ and the family.  Some would say that we've lost the focus on Christ in the family.  To some extent, I just don't believe that to be true.  We could, however, do some tweaking to make Christ more central.  But what does that mean?  I'll spend some time in the next few weeks examining that, and talking about just how families can bring Christ potentially back to the center.  Over these next few weeks, beginning this Sunday, I want to go back and look at the research one more time, to look at what Jesus said about family, and even what we find in scripture about the role of parents, couples, singles, children, youth and even older adults.  The whole idea of family has shifted so much in the last fifty to sixty years that it's important to stop for a few minutes and spend some time there.  To prepare please read Deuteronomy 6: 1 - 9.  We'll also be looking at what it means to, "Honor your father and your mother," (Exodus),  what scripture says about caring for our older adults (Proverbs), and how the church is to function as a family in the best sense of the word (I Corinthians).

Confirmation Quilts
Confirmation class is off to a great start with 16 youth participating.  As they proceed on their faith journey, they would like your prayer support.  Hanging in the narthex are prayer quilts lovingly made by Lea Fox, Doris Prestwood, and Ruth Carver.  Please take a moment to pray for our confirmands, and when you do, tie a knot on their prayer quilt.

Confirmation Update
  • Thank you to all who agreed to be mentors to our confirmands.  Your prayers and support are very meaningful to these youth.  Please remember we can all be praying for our confirmation class by tying knots in the prayer quilts hanging in the narthex.
  • During our second confirmation class, we talked about how God speaks to us through scripture.  Some key discussion points were how having the background of the times helps to clarify the meaning.   The story is not just about the words used but going deeper into the meaning of the entire message.  We also spoke about how God talks to us quietly, loudly and in all forms, but we must listen.  We did a faith walk where one partner was blindfolded and the other guided them around the church grounds.  This proved that it is uncomfortable at times to trust and it is very important to communicate and to listen to each other and also to God.
  • We also did an activity with the 10 commandments (Exodus 20) where in pairs they rewrote the commandments making the statements positive.
Kitchen Status as of April 19
The equipment deliveries are now complete and in place as planned.  The plumbing and electrical work will be complete this week.   The refrigerator and freezer will be returned to the kitchen next week.   The stainless counter top is installed with the electrical complete.   The roll up doors are complete and looking good.   The new coffee equipment is installed (plumbing & electrical).   We need to perform a full "punch list" review with corrections as necessary.  Training and testing requirements are in work as are plans for decontamination (island cabinetry/drawers, plates, silverware, china and etc.).   Halleluiah! The end is in sight.

Help Set Up New Kitchen
Want to get an early peek at the new kitchen and maybe learn how to run the new dishwasher? We are looking for volunteers on Friday and Saturday April 29th and 30th to help set up the new kitchen. Please contact  Patty Ferguson or sign up on Sunday's attendance form and let us know your preference of helping in the morning or afternoon.

Methodism 101 Class

**SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES  At  10:15  all Children will transition into  Sunday  School.  There will be two  Sunday  School classes.  Age 4 - 4th grade elementary class will meet in Room D.  Grade 5th - 8th Tween class will remain in Smith Hall.  The elementary class will continue with the Spark curriculum and the Tween  class will use the Claim the Name curriculum.   Sunday  school will end at  10:50am .  Tweens will be released when class is over and the elementary class will be escorted up to Friendship Hall after class.  If you need to pick up your child before Sunday School is released, please come to their classroom and pick them up.  For safety reasons, we can not allow kids to leave the program without their parent.

**SNACK TIME  There will be a snack offered  on Sunday  mornings.  A platter from the kitchen will be brought down to the kids.  If your child has dietary restrictions, please make sure you have filled out a  Sunday  School registration form so it is documented.

** Click Here  to sign up to host Kid's Club or teach Sunday School. Hosting Kids Club and teaching  Sunday  School is a great way to serve the church and hang out with some really cool kids.  Jen Hoerber can help you ease into these opportunities to serve our kids and can even pair you up with someone to start.

Clothing Drive for Ellensburg UMC
As part of our Lazy F Mini-Mission Trip, a crew will work at the Ellensburg Clothing Center run by the Ellensburg United Methodist Church.  Please share with those in need by donating new and gently used, clean clothing.  They have a particular need for kid's jeans and shorts size 5-12 and also summer clothing for adults, though any clothing will be gratefully accepted.   Start cleaning out your closets now and look for a clothing collection bin in the narthex next month.

Foodbank 5000 Item Challenge
As the children explore the story of Jesus feeding the 5000, we discussed how when we donate food to the food bank our little bit of food helps to feed many.  Our Sunday schoolers then decided that if Jesus could feed 5000, we could all come together and bring in 5000 food items for the food bank.  They want to chart the progress on the smiley face chart we used to visualize what 5000 actually looks like which is hanging in the hallway by the food drive donation tub.  Please bring in items for the food bank and color in a smiley face for each item you donate.  Thank you for helping our SundaySchoolers promote their desire to serve.

Vision House Luncheon
The number of homeless children is rising, and we can do something about it. The Vision House NoHomelessKids Benefit Lunch is on April 28th at the Bellevue Hilton.  Hear from formerly homeless parents who are working hard to forge a new path for their families - and how we can help them succeed. The keynote speaker is O.B. Jacobi, President of Windermere Real Estate. The luncheon is free to attend, but a request for donations will be made during the event.  Aldersgate supported the Vision House Giving Tree at Christmas and now Melinda Lilley is hosting an Aldersgate table at the luncheon - 5 spots left!.  Please join her in supporting homeless children and their families!
