Vector-borne diseases in Minnesota: Join us online May 19
Mosquitoes and ticks have always been a part of outdoor life in Minnesota. These vector-borne diseases have increased with changes in their distribution and abundance, coupled with changes in the disease organisms they transmit. Minnesota Department of Health staff will summarize current risks and discuss how a changing climate may influence the distribution and incidence of vector-borne diseases. Click here for more info.
Nontimber Forest Products Spotlight: Morel mushrooms
Morel mushrooms are probably the most recognizable and sought after edible mushroom. Morels are commonly found in woodlands or woody edges, preferring to grow around decaying elms, ash, poplar and apple trees. Click here to read more about harvesting morel mushrooms this spring from the Minnesota Harvester Handbook.
Oak wilt in Minnesota: High risk period
As of March 30, the state of Minnesota remains in a high risk period for oak wilt. We recommend avoiding pruning or wounding oaks until midsummer to reduce the risk of a new oak wilt outbreak. Next update is expected July 1, 2015. Read more about oak wilt here.
Celebrate Arbor Month in St. Paul
Come celebrate St. Paul's urban forest and the legacy of the American elm during its Arbor Month Event on May 30th at the Linwood Recreation Center from 10am to 2pm. There will be planting demonstrations, live music, tree climbing demonstrations, a nature play area, tree yoga, food, and much more! Find out more from St. Paul's Forestry page.
EAB confirmed in Fillmore County
The emerald ash borer was recently found in the city of Rushford, making it the eighth county to be quarantined for the invasive insect. If you think your ash tree is infested, go to the Do I Have Emerald Ash Borer guide available from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
It's May: Here's what's happening in your woods
Itasca County Extension Educator Julie Miedtke provides a monthly calendar of things to look for and enjoy in Minnesota's woods. Click here to find out what's in your woods in May, including ovenbirds returning from migration and female flowers of northern red oaks emerging.
Quiz of the month: Which tree are you?
What type of tree best describes your personality? Click here to find out from a fun quiz at PlayBuzz. Many of us in the Extension team got aspen--a very fitting tree for Minnesota!
