April 27, 2016 Luncheon
Larry Hostetler

Larry Hostetler has been the Chapter Services Director for the Association of Fundraising Professionals since 2011. In addition to his current job he writes "The Last Word" humor column for the online Advancing Philanthropy magazine. Larry will present a fun and informative "game show" that covers resources available through AFP to help you avoid ethical problems and navigate through those that can't be avoided. Few people want to think about ethics until it is on the front page of the paper. Why wait?

President's Message

Dear Members,

Spring has sprung! April and May are going to be busy months for AFP members. Make sure you open AFP emails to keep up with all the exciting programs and events during the next months.

Before we talk about April and May, we have much to be proud about that happened in March. 31 members from the Greater Dallas Chapter AFP attended the International Conference in Boston! What an incredible educational experience. Said our 2016 Chamberlain Scholar Erin Jines, " I would like to express my heartfelt thank you to the AFP Greater Dallas Chapter for the tremendous experience the Chamberlain Scholarship provided to me as a young professional fundraiser. This opportunity stimulated new ways of thinking and gave me important tools and connections that will continue to serve me in my career. It also reinvigorated the passion and curiosity that first drew me to this profession. I will forever remember my first AFP conference experience,

and look forward to joining my colleagues at many more!"

At the conference our chapter was recognized as a Friend of Diversity and Ten Star Gold recipient (only 34 out of 276 chapters received this designation). Then at the chapter leadership meeting, the Greater Dallas AFP received $2,500 for the highest member retention rate for 2015 and $2,500 for the highest retention rate over the past three years in the 400+ chapter category. I was so proud to accept these incentive awards on behalf of our chapter and proud of all those who helped achieve this success. We plan on having a membership party this summer to celebrate!

We had a great sell-out monthly program and Executive Conversations with guest speaker Diane Carlson in March, congratulations to our program team. I look forward to seeing you at our April educational luncheon program on April 27th, where we will be drawing for three pairs of tickets to the Byron Nelson Golf Classic. To be eligible, you must have donated at least $25 to our 2016 AFP Now! campaign. You can contribute on our website, mail a check to AFP office or make a donation at our meeting. These dollars help support our local programs, scholarships and membership events as well as support the AFP International Foundation.

May 6th is the day...the AFP DFW Philanthropy Conference will be held at the Irving Convention Center. Come hear industry guru Jerry Panas and engage in the nine educational tracks offered. Make sure you have registered!

Join us in April and May at a Young Professional program, New Member Happy Hour, our first satellite program in Colin County and much more.  Click here  to see a list of events and programs. This document will be continuously updated.

Salesmanship Club of Dallas ED Teri Isaacs shared tips on special events-focused fundraising with Paul Quinn College AFP Collegiate Chapter members in March.
(L to R: Jerrica Weeks-Thomas, Alyssa Avila, Teri Isaacs, Gardenia Soberanis and Jabari La Chaux.)

Did you know that Greater Dallas AFP sponsors a Collegiate Chapter? Paul Quinn College, the oldest Historically Black College (HBCU) west of the Mississippi and an AME Church School, is located on 146 acres in south Dallas' Trinity Forest. It has a growing cadre of students who aspire to be or already are nonprofit management professionals.

Among a handful of academic institutions and the only HBCU offering a bachelor's degree in Fundraising and Philanthropy, PQC offers a real advantage to graduates beginning their careers. AFP board member Shawn Wills, CFRE, is an evenings' adjunct faculty member, and Karen Martin, AFP Dallas member, is the student advisor and PQC Center for Fundraising and Philanthropy's executive director.

The study of fundraising and philanthropy leads to roles advancing colleges, hospitals and universities, campaign and event planning, foundation leadership, grant writing and development to address AFP's number one gap - greater diversity and inclusion.

We can all support the PQC Collegiate Chapter. Extend a warm welcome when chapter members attend our monthly luncheons and engage in conversation. Your AFP Now! contributions support PQC Chapter by underwriting student memberships, Professional Chapter lunch meeting attendance and DFW Philanthropy Conference scholarships. You are helping prepare the next generation of fundraisers!

If you would like to attend and/or present at a PQC Chapter meeting, please contact Tori Hobbs, Collegiate Chapter Liaison,  [email protected]. We are also planning a Shadow Day - more details to come.
