Please join us at the 10 am mass on Sunday as we present the 2015 Unity Award and a $10,000 honorarium to the HOPE Domestic Violence Program at St. Pius V in Pilsen.  Then congratulate Fr. Brendan Curran and his team at a special hospitality afterwards!  Members of the HOPE team, including Fr. Brendan, will be attending Sweet Home Chicago, so please seek them out to give them a warm welcome.

The HOPE Program offers programs along the entire spectrum of support in domestic violence situations, from best-case scenario (prevention) to worst-case scenario (intervention). Counseling, support groups, childcare and case management services are offered to domestic violence victims and their children. HOPE also offers counseling and support groups to male perpetrators in order to break the cycle of violence. In addition, HOPE offers programs for marriage enrichment and parenting that encourage personal, spiritual and social growth in a supportive community.

The Program started because St. Pius V Parish saw families with a grave need of domestic violence related services in their community, and on the flipside, the community also views the church as their first line of support. HOPE exists completely on a word-of-mouth basis; there is no advertising. All participants, from abusers to victims, are voluntary. There are no court-mandated participants.

The St. Pius V HOPE Program has been critical in raising awareness about the problem in Chicago, and helping parishes develop a ministry for victims of domestic violence.

The honorarium will be used to assist in funding full-time staff to support this important ministry.

Each year in conjunction with Sweet Home Chicago, the Unity Award is presented to a person or organization that best exemplifies the spirit of our patron saint, St. Josaphat. St. Josaphat gave his life while trying to bring people together and making the Gospel present. Recipients must be from the Chicago area, benefit the under-served members of our community, and be a Catholic or Catholic-related undertaking.
