ASES News - April 2016
Hello ASES Members,

I hope all of our members will enjoy keeping in touch with your ASES.  We are energized to continue to expand our expertise in education, clinical care, and research and increase our organization's activities.  This month, we present some updates from the AAOS meeting.  This includes the results from the Planning & Development Committee, lead by Bernie Morrey, as well as information from a meeting with all sub-specialties involved in upper extremity care, chaired by Bill Mallon, to gather a consensus in moving towards performance measures.  In addition, Buddy Savoie is involved with our educational committee, chaired by Anand Murthi, to develop resident and fellow education formats.

Planning & Development Committee: Update
In preparation for this meeting, the 25 past presidents were surveyed as to what, in their opinions, were the most important issues facing our organization.

The following general issues were identified (in a rough order of importance):

1.  Cooperative interaction with other specialties to address:

  • Education, Fellowship issues, CME content
  • Outcomes, CME compliance (AAOS)

2.  Membership issues (especially expanded membership); ASES Annual Meeting (Closed Meeting)

3.  International influence, relations:

  • Regarding this specific item, Dr. Jupiter plans to invite presidents of international S&E societies to the ASES Annual Meeting in Boston.  We will also have a guest nation this year (France).

Most of the discussion centered around education, fellowship programs, and CME. The nature of our Annual Meeting (Closed Meeting), impact of membership changes, and further membership opportunities were also discussed.

Action item:  In order to understand and distill the issues in a manner to allow focus and action, Dr. Jupiter will convene a strategic planning session designed to define both goals and strategies to address the above issues.

Upper Extremity Outcomes: Group Meeting
On Thursday morning during the AAOS Meeting, ASES Representatives met with representatives from AOSSM, AANA, ASSH, AAOS, and BOS to discuss the current status of work on outcomes instruments and value projects. The meeting was attended by Gerald Williams, ASES member and Past President who became the AAOS President later that day, who presented the current position and status of AAOS on these topics. Lisa Cannada, current President of the BOS, also outlined her position. After that, the sub-specialty societies presented their work on these projects and where they currently stand.

A few days later, AAOS released the Quality Outcomes Data Final Report. This included recommendations from ASES (and other societies), which were based on surveys sent out to the sub-specialty societies last fall. We continue to work with AAOS and the BOS and have had multiple e-mails concerning the possibilities of a summit on this topic or webinars and conference calls. The work goes on. At this time, the biggest concern is no longer which outcome instruments to use and recommend, but rather how do we (and all orthopaedists) collect the data, who stores it, who has access to it, and other similar, very difficult questions. The AAOS is working assiduously on this, via several different committees, and has sent an RFP (request for proposal) to companies that could collect and store the data.

Upcoming Resident and Fellow Opportunities
Dear Members,

We have exciting news in our initiation of an outreach program to bring ASES “front and center” to young orthopedic surgeons.

Under the leadership of our Education Committee and its chair, Anand Murthi, we have developed our first residents course in Shoulder and Elbow surgery to be held at the OLC in January of 2017.  Our chairs will be Charlie Getz and Paul Sethi and the target audience is PGY 3 and 4 residents.  We are hoping to not only educate these young residents in shoulder and elbow surgery, so they can take this information back to share with their fellow residents, but also to show them what ASES is all about.  A special thank you to our past-president, Bill Mallon, and current president, Jesse Jupiter, for getting this “on the board”.

A second program has been a few years in the making, but is now in place for June of 2017 (not this year, but next!).  Past president, JP Warner, and current members, Jim Esch and Matt Provencher, have graciously allowed ASES to partner with SDSI to have a fellow’s day on Saturday of the Esch course.  We are hoping that all ASES recognized fellowships will send the current year fellows (2016-2017) to the meeting to both learn and to present their main projects from the year.  The fellow’s symposium will be held on the Saturday as the SDSI (Esch course) concludes.  A cash award (The Cofield Award) will be given for the best original research presented on fellows day as judged by a panel of ASES Active Members who are in attendance.  We also hope to have a few seminars interspersed on the practical aspects of getting started in practice.  ASES has applied to our foundation to help with funding.

A special thanks to both ASES, SDSI, and their boards for allowing us to move forward with these excellent programs.  We have a few more programs in the mix and will keep you all posted as we move forward.
