The Maryland Building Industry Association
Reviewed over 200 Pieces of Legislation

The 90-day Maryland General Assembly legislative session ended at midnight last night. Over 4,000 bills were introduced and an unprecedented number of bills were reviewed by the MBIA Legislative Committee.

The Maryland Building Industry Association protected the industry by:

  • Killing the "standing" legislation that would have subjected comprehensive and rezoning plans to erroneous litigation

  • Opposing Paid Sick Leave legislation that would require all employers with more than 15 employees to provided paid sick leave to all part and full time employees

  • Killing the Fire Safety Construction Act that would have required all multifamily structures with 3 or more stories to use concrete construction as opposed to wood framing

  • Supporting an extension for local counties to adopt updated building codes

  • Supporting changes to the Wetlands Mitigation Banking Law to provide more incentives for developers to mitigate using banks

  • Negotiating amendments to builder and remodeler licensing bills
We are very proud of the successes we achieved during the 2016 Legislative Session and the MBIA Government Affairs team will continue to work hard on behalf of the building industry to make it easier for you to do your job. We are working on a full report detailing all of the legislation we reviewed and we will make that available to you shortly.
If you have questions about these issues or others on which MBIA took a position, please give me call.

Sincerely,
Lori Graf, CEO
