Legal Aid Turns 65!


 

Join us in celebrating the 65th Anniversary of Legal Aid! When Legal Aid first started in 1950, the first TV remote control was marketed, the first credit card was issued by the Diners Club, and the first named hurricane to reach Hawai`i - Hiki - hit Kaua`i, killing one person and inflicting $200,000 in damage. Sixty-five years later, we watch tv shows on our phones, Americans are now  $882.6 billion deep in credit card debt, and hurricanes and lava flow plague the Big Island. But in 65 years, Legal Aid has also grown to become the 6th largest law firm in the state with 34 attorneys and now can even help clients fill out court forms using online chat.

 

At this year's 65th Anniversary Dinner, Legal Aid will honor the following individuals and organizations who continue to help Legal Aid champion the cause of justice and  the vision of "building a just society":

 

                                                          Lifetime Achievement Award: Robert LeClair

          Community Achievement Award: Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi

           Pro Bono Award: Bank of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi County Bar Association

           Betty Vitousek Access to Justice Award: Perkin & Faria, LLLC


 Co-chairs for the 65th Anniversary Dinner are Louise Ing from Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing, Sherry Menor-McNamara from the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, and Alan Oshima from Hawaiian Electric Company.

AmeriCorps advocate Magdalena Bajon recognized for exceptional service at Maui Self-Help Center

 

Congratulations to AmeriCorps advocate Magdalena Bajon for receiving the Liberty Bell Award at the Maui County Bar Association's Annual Dinner held at the Maui Tropical Plantation. Magdalena was honored for her exceptional service at the Maui Court Self-Help Center.

Legal Aid staff attorney Janet Kelly, AmeriCorps advocate Maya Scimeca, and Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center outreach specialist Margarita Cholymay hold an evening outreach event at Kakaako.
