Legal Aid's 65th Anniversary Dinner was held on April 22 at the Hawaii Convention Center with over 400 guests in attendance.

In partnership with the State Public Library System and with a grant from the State Justice Institute, Legal Aid has helped create online court and legal forms that people can now access at home or at the local library. As a way to introduce this new resource
and find innovative ways to reach and help more in our community, Legal Aid AmeriCorps members and staff will be conducting "Know Your Rights" presentations at 10 public libraries statewide. These presentations provide legal information on an area of law that the local librarians have identified as being the most helpful for their patrons.

Congratulations to Legal Aid staff attorney Janet Kelly for being named the 2014 "Outstanding Woman Lawyer of the Year" by Hawaii Women Lawyers
Legal Aid staff attorney Janet Kelly was honored with the 2014 Outstanding Woman Lawyer Award on April 17 at the Plaza Club.
Janet Kelly, Esq., a 1999 graduate of Seattle University School of Law, joined the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii in 2001. For over a decade, Janet has provided legal services to those experiencing homelessness through outreach and on-site services at locations around Oahu, from the beaches of the Leeward Coast to the Institute of Human Services to Waikiki Health Center. Janet is also the 2015 Vice-Chair for Partners In Care, a coalition of Oahu's homeless service providers, government representatives and community stakeholders working together in partnership to end homelessness.

Congratulations to HIJC Staff Attorney Calleen Ching for receiving the 2015 Rhoda Lewis Award from the Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation
Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center staff attorney Calleen Ching was honored with the 2015 Rhoda Lewis Award from the Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation. The award is named in honor of the woman who was the first female to serve on the Hawaii Supreme Court and who devoted her life to public service.
Calleen Ching brings a record of exceptional leadership and strategic vision to Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii. Her work has immediately impacted many within Hawaii's immigrant population by representing abused foreigners in immigration cases, as well as ongoing collaboration with government and non-profit agencies. She is directly responsible for the development of culturally appropriate services for abuse victims to service providers.
Her prior professional posts include Senior Attorney, Project Director, and Acting Executive Director at Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center (formerly Na Loio). All assignments provided her with an in-depth understanding of the organization, and the clients they serve as well. Prior to her work at Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center, Calleen Ching served with a number of community focused organizations to include AmeriCorps, Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, and the City and County of Honolulu. Her professional endeavors reflect Calleen's strenuous work and her commitment to servant leadership.
Congratulations, Calleen Ching, on your peer recognition through your selection for the 2015 Rhoda Lewis Award. This amazing distinction is a true testament to your dedication, hard work, and public service to the people of Hawaii. Our community continues to be influenced and improved by much of what you accomplish.
