36 U.S. Code § 117 - Mother's Day

(a) Designation.- The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day.
(b) Proclamation.- The President is requested to issue a proclamation calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings, and on the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places, on Mother's Day as a public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of the United States.

Note: Just in case you forgot to display your flag on Mother's Day last weekend.

Equal Justice Conference 2015

 

Equal Justice Conference 2015
Over 800 participants came from all over the country for this year's Equal Justice Conference sponsored by the American Bar Association held in Austin, Texas. As one of the few women executive directors of a major legal service provider, Legal Aid's Executive Director,  M. Nalani Fujimori Kaina  was part of a panel session on "Women In Leadership at Legal Services Program ." According to the ABA, women lead only 38% of LSC (receives funding from the Legal Services Corporation) programs despite being nearly 76% of the legal services workforce. 

Members of the HSBA Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services to the Public attended the conference along with Hawaii Judiciary staff and Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald.

Partnership with public libraries in conducting "Know Your Rights" presentations statewide

 

AmeriCorps member Shea Henson provides landlord-tenant information at the
Hawaii State Public Library.

 

Legal Aid's partnership with the State Public Library System in conducting "Know Your Rights" presentations at 10 public libraries statewide continues to be a great resource and program for our local librarians. Legal information presentations on landlord-tenant, senior issues, or divorce have been conducted in the following libraries by: 
  • Wailuku Public Library: Stacey Casco (Maui staff member)
  • Kaneohe Public Library: Michelle Horton, Andi Edmunds, Sami Nakahira, Shea Henson (AmeriCorps members)
  • Honokaa Public Library: Ramona Herlighy (AmeriCorps member) and Lauren Knudsen (Hilo staff member)
  • Lanai Public & School Library: Pua Kanno (Lanai staff member)
  • Kaimuki Public Library: Neva Kerres (Pro Bono attorney with WSRSL Elder Law Program) and Maya Scimeca (AmeriCorps member)
  • Lihue Public Library: Bayley Root (AmeriCorps member)
  • Hawaii State Library: Shea Henson (AmeriCorps member)
  • Kailua-Kona Public Library: Erin Henschel (AmeriCorps member) and Charlie McCreary (Kona staff member)
Laverne "Pua" Kanno from the Lanai Legal Aid office provided legal information on issues in family law at the Lanai Public & School Library.

In the Community

AmeriCorps member Andi Edmunds, HIJC staff member Marissa Llamido, and Fair Housing outreach coordinator Erin White provided legal information at the Filipino Fiesta & Parade in Kapiolani Park.
