36 U.S. Code ? 109-Father's Day

(a) Designation.- The third Sunday in June is Father's Day.
(b) Proclamation.- The President is requested to issue a proclamation-
(1) calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Father's Day;
(2) inviting State and local governments and the people of the United States to observe Father's Day with appropriate ceremonies; and
(3) urging the people of the United States to offer public and private expressions of Father's Day to the abiding love and gratitude they have for their fathers.

Legal Aid Honolulu Blood Drive


60% of us will need a blood transfusion at some point in our lives yet  only 2% of the population in Hawaii donate blood. 

 

The Legal Aid Honolulu office is partnering with the Blood Bank of Hawaii's Save Our Summer 2015 program. The blood mobile will be outside of the Honolulu office on Bethel Street.

Monday, July 6 from 9:00 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Open to friends and families

 

Give Blood, Go to Disney (unless otherwise barred) 

Donate blood between May 25, 2015 and September 7, 2015, at a donor center or mobile blood drive, and enter to win a 4-night/5-day getaway to Disneyland. Package includes airfare, hotel and park passes for a family of 4 (2-adults and 2-children under the age of 10). First time donors get double entry. Must be 18 or older to enter. Prize is non-transferrable.


 

Kona Office Open House

 

The Kona Legal Aid office celebrated its move to a new office with an open house on June 17th. The community was invited to visit the new office, received a warm welcome from the Legal Aid staff, and had the chance to win raffle prizes along the way.

Hawaii Access to Justice Conference 2015 


 
The Hawaii Access to Justice Commission sponsored this year's Access to Justice Conference with the theme of "Narrowing the Justice Gap." Jonathan Asher, Executive Director of the Colorado Legal Services served as the keynote speaker and opening remarks were given by Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald and Associate Judge Daniel R. Foley, Intermediate Court of Appeals. Chief Justice Recktenwald highlighted some of the projects that Legal Aid was involved in this year; from the A2J online forms to our partnership with the state public libraries. 


 
Hilo Managing Attorney Valerie Grab  shared her experience in organizing disaster relief legal clinics in a workshop for "Delivering Pro Bono Services to Rural Communities." Legal Aid Executive Director M. Nalani Fujimori Kaina  was part of a panel presentation on "Technology and Access to Justice." She shared about upcoming projects that will help increase the resources available to self-represented litigants. One project seeks to create an online-portal that directs the public to the resources that best matches their legal needs.
