Help MVCAC Stop SB 1246

Dear MVCAC Members,

We need you to send letters on your district letterhead to the Senate Environmental Quality Committee AND your state senators by CLOSE OF BUSINESS, APRIL 7TH . This bill would endanger public health by requiring that mosquito and vector control districts provide a MANDATORY notice to government officials 7 DAYS prior to an aerial application. Our legislative advocates have met with the author's office and now need your voices to stop this dangerous legislation.

We have attached a sample letter (updated 4/8/16) for you to send to your state senator, as well as talking points for you to use when calling their offices. It is critical that we stick to the talking points, which the Public Relations Committee worked hard to draft. The letter has several places you can add information specific to your district.

Please fax your letters to the Senate Environmental Quality Committee at (916) 322-3519, your own state senator, and KP Public Affairs at (916) 448-4923.

If you have any questions please feel contact Jeremy Wittie, MVCAC Legislative Committee Chair, at 760-399-6941 or jwittie@cvmvcd.org

Surveillance, insecticide resistance and control of an invasive Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) population in California [version 2; referees: 1 approved, 1 approved with reservations]
Abstract
The invasion and subsequent establishment in California of Aedes aegypti in 2013 has created new challenges for local mosquito abatement and vector control districts. Studies were undertaken to identify effective and economical strategies to monitor the abundance and spread of this mosquito species as well as for its control. Overall, BG Sentinel (BGS) traps were found to be the most sensitive trap type to measure abundance and spread into new locations. Autocidal-Gravid-Ovitraps (AGO-B), when placed at a site for a week, performed equally to BGS in detecting the presence of female Ae. aegypti.Considering operational cost and our findings, we recommend use of BGS traps for surveillance in response to service requests especially in locations outside the known infestation area. We recommend AGO-Bs be placed at fixed sites, cleared and processed once a week to monitor mosquito abundance within a known infestation area. Long-term high density placements of AGO-Bs were found to show promise as an environmentally friendly trap-kill control strategy. California Ae. aegypti were found to be homozygous for the V1016I mutation in the voltage gated sodium channel gene, which is implicated to be involved in insecticide resistance. This strain originating from Clovis, California was resistant to some pyrethroids but not to deltamethrin in bottle bio-assays. Sentinel cage ultra-low-volume (ULV) trials using a new formulation of deltamethrin (DeltaGard®) demonstrated that it provided some control (average of 56% death in sentinel cages in a 91.4 m spray swath) after a single truck mounted aerial ULV application in residential areas.

New Members-Only Area on MVCAC.org
Dear MVCAC Member,

We have been working behind-the-scenes to try and remedy some issues with our current MVCAC website and the members-only content areas.  Although, the site will be getting an upgraded look and feel in the coming months, we wanted to make sure that members-only content was both easy for members to access and secure.

If you visit MVCAC.org and hover over the new login tab, you will see two login option s:
  1. MVCAC Website Login
  2. Member Services Portal

The MVCAC Website Login will require you to set up a user ID to access for the first time and will grant you access to all public and member-only content in one place.
To create a login for this area:
  1. Go to mvcac.org
  2. Click the login tab on the homepage menu bar.  This will bring you to the site login page: http://www.mvcac.org/site-login/
  3.  Scroll down to the "New User Registration" section of the page and fill out the requested information
  4. Once you have registered, MVCAC staff will need to verify your membership before granting access.  Please allow 1-2 business days for staff to process your request.
  5. Once your request is approved, the email you provided will be sent a temporary password allowing you to login.
  6. Copy and paste the password provided in that email into the MVCAC Website Login screen with the username you chose.

The Member Services Portal is the login area you are used to, this will continue to be used to register for events and pay dues online.  This will no longer be the area to access members-only content.

Of course, if you have any questions about the new login process feel free to contact MVCAC staff and we will be happy to assist you.
