Government officials in Bangladesh say that they are reassessing safety and compliance for over 80 factories, some of whom have been removed from both the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety and the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. Government inspectors say that they plan to scrutinize these facilities much more closely and will take legal action, including closure, on any facilities found to be out of compliance with the law. (

Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport recently underwent a thorough security assessment by officials from the British Department of Transportation to determine whether or not a ban on direct cargo flights between Bangladesh and the U.K. should be lifted. The ban was prompted by an earlier inspection conducted by British officials last year which revealed serious security gaps at the airport. Officials from the United States have also pledged to assist the airport in tightening security. (

Overall exports from Bangladesh grew by 9.2% year-on-year in March driven primarily by stronger garment exports, according to the country's Export Promotion Bureau. The bureau noted that sales of garments rose by nearly 10% year-on-year between July 2015 and March 2016 to reach US$20.44 billion. (

The government of Bangladesh has announced a new effort aimed at protecting the safety of garment workers. The Occupational Safety Hazard (OSH) profile effort would provide for the establishment of a committee at each factory to provide clear guidance regarding the safety and health of workers. (
